My 14th Sunshine Blogger Award!

Out of all the awards I’ve been nominated for, the Sunshine Blogger Award is the one I’ve received the most. My recent nomination from Maddy (of Classic Film And TV Corner) is now my 14th nomination! As with past Sunshine Blogger Awards, I will answer the eleven questions Maddy provided to the nominees. Then, I will nominate eleven bloggers and give them eleven new questions. Before I begin this award post, I’d like to thank Maddy for this nomination of the Sunshine Blogger Award!

1. Which film made you a classic film fan?

For me, it wasn’t just one film. It was actually having access to so many classic films through Turner Classic Movies. When it comes to the channel’s catalog, Turner Classic Movies has premiered a variety of titles; from the iconic pictures to the lesser known tales. In fact, I discovered movies such as Bedlam, Tommy, and A Little Romance because of Turner Classic Movies!

    2. What are your top 5 Westerns from the classic era?

Sadly, I don’t have an answer for this question. That’s because I don’t watch movies from the Western genre consistently enough to choose top five favorites. This is definitely a sign I need to review more Western films.

      3. Favourite British film from the 1940’s?

This is another question I don’t have an answer for. Similar to what I said about Western films, I don’t watch 1940’s British movies regularly enough to choose a favorite. But I do need to check out more titles so I can, one day, have a go-to film.

        4. A director whose work you haven’t seen or need to see more of?

Though not a director, Joe Pasternak has produced two films I liked; Anchors Aweigh and The Unfinished Dance. But I realized while looking through his filmography how I haven’t seen many of his projects. It seems like he produced a lot of musicals. So, if I’m in the mood to write about a musical film, I want to seek out more of Joe Pasternak’s titles!

          5. Is there a film that you felt was improved in a director’s cut release?

Five years ago, I wrote an editorial about the Tim Pope Cut of The Crow: City of Angels. In that editorial, I explained what the Tim Pope Cut is and provided reasons why it should be released. As of late June, 2025, there has been no official word on the Tim Pope Cut’s fate. But if it was released, The Crow: City of Angels would be improved from its theatrical cut, as it would restore the creative team’s original vision.

            6. If you were teaching a classic film course which ten films would you show to the students and why?

The Bodyguard (1992) – Subjects would include how to write a timeless story, seamlessly blending genres, creating creative action scenes, and curating movie soundtracks

Ben-Hur (1959) – Subjects would include how to use cinematography to a story’s advantage, incorporating religion/faith into a script, constructing set design, and the importance of location scouting

Singin in the Rain (1952) — Subjects would include how to form strong camaraderie between characters, crafting creative musical numbers, exploring cinematic history through film, and discussing musicals from the Breen Code era

The Phantom of the Opera (1925) — Subjects would include how using film can expand the nature of storytelling, utilizing make-up to enhance characters, the importance of film preservation and restoration, and exploring the history of the Silent Film era

Lawrence of Arabia (1962) — Subjects would include how to effectively use architecture in a story, exploring World War I through film, how scenery can visually enhance a movie, and discussing what makes a strong acting performance

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) — Subjects would include how to effectively use suspense in storytelling, the dos and don’ts of adapting literature, comparing and contrasting the legal system in To Kill a Mockingbird to other pieces of entertainment media, and how strong acting performances can bring a sense of realism to a film

Nosferatu (1922) — Subjects would include how to tell a story without utilizing dialogue, using music to elevate scenes, exploring the early history of the horror genre, and the importance of strong on-screen chemistry

            — Hallmark Hall of Fame’s A Tale of Two Cities (1980) — Subjects would include exploring the history of Hallmark Hall of Fame, an analysis of made-for-television movies, how to manage a film’s run-time wisely, and creating an immersive world through attention to detail

Jurassic Park (1993) — Subjects would include how to use CGI wisely, why including a “Voice of Reason” is important, discussing cinematic trends of the 1990s, and exploring the evolution of “nerds” in pop culture

Toy Story (1995) — Subjects would include the history of 3-D animation, different styles of animation in the 1990s, creating stories from simplistic ideas, and how to create a theme song for your movie

The Bodyguard poster created by Tig Productions, Kasdan Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures

            7. If you could work in the film industry in any capacity what role would you want and why?

Definitely the preservation/restoration department! I’ve mentioned before how I find the subject of “lost media” fascinating. For every released movie from any given studio, there are likely three films that are either “lost” or “partially lost”. Through the aforementioned department, I would try to restore as many “lost” or “partially lost” films as possible. Therefore, consumers would have more movie options!

              8. Which film stunt do you think most deserved an Academy Award?

When I wrote an editorial about The Bodyguard, I talked about “the kitchen scene”. This scene shows two bodyguards fighting in a kitchen due to a miscommunication. As I explained in my editorial, “the kitchen scene” utilizes elements not often incorporated in action scenes. No dialogue or music is included, forcing the audience to give their undivided attention to the events happening on-screen. The kitchen itself is seen by the actors as a challenge, due to the space being smaller. Not only does the fight choreography make good use of this space, it’s also clean, precise, and filled with adrenaline. In my opinion, “the kitchen scene” is the best scene from any action movie. With everything I said, I wish this scene was, at least, nominated for an award.

                9. Favourite musical from the 1950’s?

Out of all the musicals from the 1950s I’ve reviewed, I’ll choose Singin in the Rain and The King and I! While both films have good musical numbers, they each have other qualities I liked. Some examples include the costume design from The King and I and the strong camaraderie between the characters in Singin in the Rain.

                  10. What are your top 10 Noir films?

The noir genre is infrequently covered on 18 Cinema Lane. But out of the films I reviewed, I did like Gaslight, The Big Sleep, Cry Wolf, Strangers on a Train, and Bedlam.

                    11. Which actor who never won an Academy Award do you think deserved one the most?

Anyone who has followed 18 Cinema Lane long enough will know Swept from the Sea is one of the best films I ever reviewed. Vincent Perez’s portrayal of Yanko is one of the reasons why I like this movie. As I said in my Swept from the Sea review, Vincent gave a captivating performance that was both heart-warming and heart-breaking. Through the use of emotion, he was able to say so much without saying anything at all. The on-screen chemistry between Vincent and Rachel Weisz was strong, which made Yanko and Amy’s relationship feel genuine. Plus, Vincent is one of the few actors I know of who can flawlessly pull off a Russian accent. The fact Swept from the Sea didn’t seem to be included in the awards discussion was, in my opinion, a missed opportunity. So, it’s a shame Vincent wasn’t, at least, nominated for his performance.

A Bouquet Full of Sunshine Blogger Awards

2024 is a historic year for 18 Cinema Lane. This year, I have been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award a total of four times, breaking the previous record of two nominations for any given award! The first nomination of 2024 came from Hamlette (from Hamlette’s Soliloquy) back in March. Then, in April, I received a nomination from Rebecca (of Taking Up Room). Three months later, I acquired two more nominations; another one from Rebecca and one from Virginie (from The Wonderful World of Cinema). Because of how many times I’ve been nominated, I have curated the list of questions by choosing at least one question from every nominator. So, before I finally answer these questions, I’d like to thank Hamlette, Rebecca, and Virginie for the nominations and present the award’s official rules!

                      The Rules:

                      1. Display the award’s official logo somewhere on your blog.

                      2. Thank the person who nominated you.

                      3. Provide a link to your nominator’s blog.

                      4. Answer your nominator’s questions.

                      5. Nominate up to 11 bloggers.

                      6. Ask your nominees 11 questions.

                      7. Notify your nominees by commenting on at least one of their blog posts.

                      The Questions

                      1. What movie do you really want to change the ending of?

Oh, definitely The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Out of courtesy for my readers who may not have seen this trilogy, I will not spoil the aforementioned movie. But if you have seen the film or are a fan of Thorin, Fili, Kili, and/or Tauriel, you’d know why I chose this movie for this question.

                      2. It’s MGM’s one hundredth birthday this month (April 2024) and you’re off to visit their original studio lot. Where do you go first?

The Archives! I find the subject of “lost media” fascinating. For every released movie from any given studio, there are likely three films that are either “lost” or “partially lost”. If I were granted access to MGM’s Archives, I would try to restore as many “partially lost” or “lost” films as realistically possible!

                      3. What do you think was the most deserving Best Picture Oscar, and why?

I can’t really choose a Best Picture winner that was “most deserving”, as I haven’t seen every film that was nominated for the prize. But I can agree the 1984 movie, Amadeus, was a good Oscar choice! While the film is a glamourous looking picture, it also contains depth. An important part of the story explores the music industry, from the work that goes into making music to how fame can affect the heart and soul. I’d actually make the claim Amadeus is one of the best biopics I’ve ever seen!

                      4. Have you ever changed your opinion of a movie and if so, which movie was it?

This has happened on some occasions throughout my blogging journey. The most recent example is when I reviewed 1983’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. I mentioned in that review’s introduction how I was revisiting the film after a long period of time, as I remembered liking it in the past. But when I watched the movie again, I found it to be just ok. Like I said when I shared my overall impression on the film, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever felt more like a “very special episode” of a television show than a movie.

                      5. What movie do you wish had a sequel, but it doesn’t?

It’s such a coincidence I get asked this question, as I created a list of the top ten Hallmark movies that should have received a sequel back in January! If I had to choose one film from that list, it would be 2021’s Mystery 101: Deadly History. In my list, I explained how Hallmark choosing not to create, at least, one more Mystery 101 movie was a missed opportunity. This is because a final film would have performed well in viewership numbers and given fans some closure.

                      6. Which film has been the biggest surprise this year, good or not good?

When it comes to good surprises, that would definitely be 2004’s I Am David! In fact, it is, so far, still the best film I’ve seen this year! Every aspect of the production came together to create a movie that truly felt genuine. There were even some creative decisions that elevated the story, such as the importance given to Europe’s natural landscape. What also makes this film special are the plot twists that were effectively woven into the story!

I Am David poster created by Walden Media, Film and General Productions, Lionsgate Films, Artisan Entertainment, and David Productions Ltd.

                      7. You are a mixologist and create a cocktail honouring a movie star. Who do you honour, and how do you make your cocktail? It can be without alcohol!

Four years ago, I wrote an editorial on how the movie-going experience changed between when Phantom of the Megaplex premiered in 2000 and 2020. One of these changes was the addition of bars in movie theaters. While the theater in Phantom of the Megaplex doesn’t serve alcohol, especially since the movie is a family friendly picture, Movie Mason (portrayed by Mickey Rooney) is one of its patrons. With all that said, I would a craft a non-alcohol beverage called “The Movie Mason”. Some of the drink’s ingredients would include candy found at the movie theater. The beverage’s texture would be similar to a milkshake/slushie.

                      8. Which movie of 2024 has been your favorite so far? Your least favorite?

As I mentioned in answer number six, 2004’s I Am David is, so far, still the best film I’ve seen this year! Meanwhile, the 2004 adaptation of Frankenstein (starring Vincent Perez) is still the worst film I’ve seen this year, so far. I explained in my review of the Hallmark adaptation of Frankenstein (which was also released in 2004) how a technical error on Wikipedia led me to believe Vincent’s movie was the Hallmark version. The reason why I’ve brought up this error is to prevent people who are interested in watching Hallmark’s adaptation from making the same mistake I did.

                      9. Are there any movies coming out in 2024 that you are looking forward to?

Yes, the next Curious Caterer film,
Curious Caterer: Drumstick Drama! According to Net from It’s a Wonderful
Movie, the film is currently in production and will likely premiere this Fall.
Because Curious Caterer: Foiled Plans was such a good movie, I’m excited
                      for this series’ next chapter!

                      10. One of my local theaters is going to exhibit a UFC fight next month (May 2024). What are
your thoughts on movie theaters showing sporting events?

This February, I wrote a Word on
the Street story about a Spanish theater chain broadcasting Eurovision’s Grand
Final in their theaters. Two months later, I wrote another Word on the Street
story about U.K. cinemas choosing to premiere Eurovision’s Grand Final. Even
though Eurovision and UFC are two completely different events, the decision to
show these events in movie theaters accomplishes the same thing: providing a
memorable experience for those who can’t attend the event live. Another thing
these theater screened events accomplish is providing extra revenue for movie
theaters, especially those from smaller chains or independently owned.

                      11. Is there a film you think could have been made into a tv series as well?
                      (Like M*A*S*H* or Fargo)?

Going back to my list of the top
ten Hallmark movies that should have received a sequel, I will choose 2016’s For
                      Love & Honor
! Because the film is about a school’s commandant and
academic dean working together to save their facility, the story could lay the
foundation for a series that primarily focuses on a group of academy faculty as
they navigate personal and professional problems. Stories about the school’s students
may have served as subplots on the show.

Two Sunshine Blogger Awards are Better Than One!

Back in August, Hamlette, from Hamlette’s Soliloquy, nominated me for the Sunshine Blogger Award! A month later, Rebecca, from Taking Up Room, also nominated me for this same award! Because I was nominated twice in a short amount of time, I’m accepting my eighth and ninth Sunshine Blogger Awards by answering half of Rebecca’s questions and half of Hamlette’s questions. Thank you, Rebecca and Hamlette for the nominations! It’s been over a year since I received a blogging award, so this was such a pleasant surprise for me! Before I start answering the award questions, here are the official award rules which are:

                            1. Thank the blogger who nominated you in the blog post and link back to their blog.

                            2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.

                            3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.

                            4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

                            1. What are your top five movies from this year? So far, anyway.

                            1. Hallmark Hall of Fame’s Caroline?
                            2. Hallmark Hall of Fame’s A Tale of Two Cities
                            3. The Great Muppet Caper
                            4. Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Murder in G Major
                            5. RKO 281

                            2. What’s the last movie you watched?

I recently saw the Lifetime movie, Stalked by My Stepsister. While the film was ok, even somewhat predictable, I was impressed with Eva Igo’s portrayal of Devon, the titular stepsister! In Lifetime movies, a villainous character will typically have a more over-the-top personality as their true colors start to show. Eva consistently carried her character with a poised seriousness, her performance reminding me of performances I’ve seen in period dramas/historical fiction projects. Therefore, I’d like to see Eva star in a period drama/historical fiction program some day!

                            3. Which movies do you think deserve the Broadway treatment?

With the entertainment industry capitalizing on ‘80s nostalgia, I’m surprised no one has thought of remaking the 1985 movie, Girls Just Want to Have Fun. It’s been years since I saw the film. But from what I remember, I liked it! Since the story revolves around a dance competition, there are plenty of performing and choregraphing opportunities for a Broadway show. Plus, there’s always the option of either retelling the story in the ‘80s or putting the story in a new era!

                            4. What’s the next movie you plan to watch?

For my Familyathon blogathon, I’m planning on watching and reviewing the 1979 made-for-TV movie, …and Your Name Is Jonah! I haven’t had the best of luck finding a television film from the ‘70s I like, so I’m hoping this one is good!

                            5. Which movies are you looking forward to seeing next year?

The recent writers and actors strike have caused several movies to be pushed back from their original release dates. However, most of the films that have 2024 release dates seem to be unnecessary sequels. I also don’t know what’s in store for Hallmark, as the network has not announced any upcoming movies for 2024. Despite all this, there are things I’m looking forward to next year, such as season eleven of When Calls the Heart and the Eurovisionathon readathon!

                            6. Pirates or vampires?

Since I’ve reviewed more movies featuring vampires, that’s what I’ll choose.

                            7. Which movies (if any) do you regret watching this year?

Honestly, I can’t think of any films I’ve seen this year that I’ve regretted watching and/or reviewing. I approach every movie I see hoping it is good. Even if one turns out less than stellar, I still try to find things about the film I liked. This is the reason why I start every movie review talking about what I liked about the movie. No matter how a film turns out, I’m grateful for the opportunity to receive my own, honest opinion on it.

                            8. What TV show(s) have you seen every episode of at least once?

Definitely When Calls the Heart! This includes the Christmas/holiday films and the Hallmark movie from 2013.

                            9. You have the chance to be a guest host on TCM. Which show do you host or which kinds of movies do you want to introduce?

During these five years of movie blogging, I have reviewed many made-for-tv movies. Some of these titles have been hidden gems, such as the aforementioned RKO 281. While I don’t know if made-for-TV films would be considered “classic” cinema, I would want to host a made-for-TV movie marathon!

                            10. What new movie release are you looking forward to?

As I stated in answer number five, the recent writers and actors strike have caused several movies to be pushed back from their original release dates. Not only do most of the films with 2024 release dates seem to be unnecessary sequels, Hallmark also hasn’t announced any upcoming movies for 2024. But based on the trailers I’ve seen, Napolean looks like it has potential to be an interesting period drama. I’ll wait until I’ve heard reviews of the movie before I decide to check it out.

                            11. Do you have a favorite silent movie? If so, which one?

I haven’t reviewed many silent films on my blog. But out of the ones I’ve written about, I liked both Sunnyside and Wild Oranges! Since I reviewed each movie for a Blog Follower Dedication Review, I’ll link these reviews below if you’re interested in reading my opinion on the films.

The Sunshine Blogger Award and The Blogger Recognition Award: Two Awards for the Price of One

Last month, Rebecca from Taking Up Room nominated me for two awards, the Sunshine Blogger Award and the Blogger Recognition Award! But because January was such a busy month for me, I had to postpone my award post to February. Now, I’m finally able to accept these awards from Rebecca! Thank you for choosing me as one of your nominees! It has been a few months since I received an award, so I appreciate the recognition. Before I start answering questions, I need to list the rules for each award. Here are the following:

Since this is my fifth Blogger Recognition Award, I’ll provide a link to my very first blog post and my first Blogger Recognition Award post. Those articles explain why I started my blog.

                            Advice for New Bloggers

                            1. Be kind to others – Behind every article is a person dealing with a variety of situations in life. Whenever you write on your blog or interact with bloggers, remember the Golden Rule: “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.
                            2. Plan ahead – If you are participating in multiple blog events or would like to create certain posts within a given month, write those post ideas and all of the deadlines or dates you’d like to publish those posts down on a calendar. This is just one way to help you stay organized!

Before I reveal my nominees, let me list the rules and my answers for the Sunshine Blogger Award!

                            Sunshine Blogger Award Rules

                            1. What’s your hope for 2021?

Anyone who has read my television show re-caps would know I’m a fan of When Calls the Heart. However, I have become a fan of The Crow as well. What would be the best way to bring the best of both worlds together? Having Bai Ling join the main cast of When Calls the Heart, portraying Hope Valley’s first female Mountie! Since the show’s inception, many characters with various backstories and personalities have found their way to Hope Valley. If the creative team decided to do this, it would be a perfect opportunity to not only introduce a new character and story, but also give an underrated actress more recognition!

                            2. What helped you stay sane in 2020?

Definitely writing and maintaining my blog. By doing those things, it gave me something to look forward to. My blog even reached 200 followers in 2020!

                            3. Are there any movies you’re looking forward to this year?

Either Fast and Furious 9 or the new mystery films from Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

                            4. You can visit any five celebrity homes from any era. Which ones would you pick?

One celebrity’s home that I find fascinating is Azusa Barbie’s! If you are not familiar with Azusa, she is a Youtuber who is also a Barbie collector. Azusa creates custom Barbie themed items as well, such as Barbie window blinds. Seeing her apartment in person would be so cool!

                            5. You’re about to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. What, if anything, would you take that the experts might frown on?

I would bring Creek Stewart from the Weather Channel show, SOS: HOW TO SURVIVE! During our hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, Creek could teach me how to survive in an emergency, even though the “experts” would think I was defeating the purpose of the hike itself.

                            6. Who are your three favorite film critics and why?

I don’t follow film critics as closely as other people do. However, if I had to choose three of them, they would be Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel, and myself.

                            7. When you’re watching stuff other than movies, do you prefer YouTube and streaming services or traditional broadcast TV?

It depends on the program. I watch more movies than TV shows, but there are some shows I watch that are featured on traditional television, such as When Calls the Heart. Other times, I watch videos on Youtube that feature topics that interest me.

                            8. If you could adapt a TV show into a movie, which one would you pick and why?

The first scripted television show Hallmark ever created was Cedar Cove. In 2015, Hallmark Channel ended the showafter season three, with the season finale leaving the overall story on a cliff-hanger. Since then, fans of the show have been asking for a movie to wrap those storylines up. Even though this idea doesn’t seem to be placed very high on Hallmark’s list of priorities, a Cedar Cove movie would give the fans a sense of closure.

                            9. Which film prop or costume would you most like to own?

If I had to choose one item, it would be Grace Kelly’s weekend suitcase from Rear Window! I have always thought that suitcase was so cute and dainty. I believe the one used in the movie was sold at an auction. However, I wouldn’t be opposed to owning a replica.

                            10. Who is your favorite movie or TV couple? Your least favorite?

My favorite couple from pop culture is Dom and Letty from the Fast and Furious series! I like seeing their relationship progress over the course of the franchise. It also helps that their relationship is a healthy one, where we see Dom and Letty respecting one another and using cars and/or racing as a way to bring them closer together.

When I think about movie or TV couples I don’t like, Top Dollar and Myca’s relationship from The Crow comes to mind. To me, their relationship is so toxic, that the more I think about it, the worse it gets. I plan on writing an editorial in the near future about why I feel this way.

                            11. What was the last album you listened to?

Lately, I’ve listening to individual songs. But, from what I remember, the last album I listened to was The Bodyguard soundtrack.

Accepting my Fourth Blogger Recognition Award!

While the Legends of Western Cinema Week was just getting started, I was nominated for my fourth Blogger Recognition Award! Like my Sunshine Blogger Award nomination, I waited until after the aforementioned blogathon to officially accept my award. Before the start of any new blogging events, I’m taking this time to create my award post. This award was given to me by J-Dub, creator of the blog Dubsism! On this blog, you’ll find thorough articles about sports and film. J-Dub also has several interesting series, such as “Movies Everybody Loves That I Hate” and “Sports Analogies Hidden In Classic Movies”. You can check out these and other articles at this link:

                            https://dubsism.com/

Thank you, J-Dub, for giving me my fourth Blogger Recognition Award! I appreciate your kind words and thoughtfulness. Before I start this award process, let me list the rules below:

#1: Thank the blogger who nominated you and include a link to their blog.

#2: Post the award banner on your blog.

#3: Share the reason you started your blog.

                            #6: Tell your nominees

Because this is the fourth time I’ve received this award, I’ll post a link to my very first blog post and my first Blogger Recognition Award post. I’m doing this to avoid repeating myself.

I Received my First Blogger Recognition Award!

Introducing Sally Silverscreen and 18 Cinema Lane

The first piece of advice I will give is to think before you post. Behind every keyboard is a human being with thoughts, feelings, and their own unique perspectives. There have also been stories where things said and done on the internet have negatively affected people in the long run. Every published post should be given a good amount of thought before it gets released to the public. My second piece of advice is always proofread your work. No writer is perfect, as there are going to be errors in almost any piece of writing. Taking the time to proofread articles before they are published will improve their overall quality.

Six days ago, Gill from Realweegiemidget Reviews nominated me for a Blogger Recognition Award! Gill is a dynamic blogger who writes about multiple entertainment related topics. Realweegiemidget Reviews is also a go-to blog for blogathon news. If you’d like to check out this great site, you can visit this link:

                            https://weegiemidget.wordpress.com/

Thank you, Gill, for this nomination! This blog is able to succeed because of thoughtful bloggers like you!

It’s now time for me to list the award’s official rules, which are:

                            1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.

                            3. Since this is my third time winning the Blogger Recognition Award, I’ll share the link to my first award of this kind. I’ll also share a link to my very first blog post. This is to prevent myself from sounding like a broken record.

I Received my First Blogger Recognition Award!

Introducing Sally Silverscreen and 18 Cinema Lane

                            4. My first piece of advice is to always remain humble. Blogging is a journey where you will experience ups and downs. While it’s nice to receive notoriety and praise, never forget what’s really important. My second piece of advice is never give up on yourself. Challenges will arise during your time blogging. As a blogger, there are times where I have had my doubts. However, I chose to remain consistent in what I wrote about and how often I published content. I can only for myself, but I believe this consistency has paid off!

                            5. Now is the time for me to nominate 15 bloggers for this award! This group of nominees are:

                            Answers

                            1. Would you rather star in films or work behind the scenes?

What compels me to watch a movie is the story. Even when I review a film on my blog, I judge the story itself by how well the script was written. Writing has always been a passion of mine, which is one of the reasons why I started 18 Cinema Lane. For these reasons, I would choose to write movies rather than star in them.

                            2. What’s the best movie you’ve seen so far this year? The worst?

The best movie I’ve seen this year, so far, is one that I reviewed recently. That is The Boy Who Could Fly! As I said in my review, I was surprised by how well the film aged. It’s a hidden gem that I’m thankful to have discovered! For the worst movie I’ve seen this year, so far, that is still Marriage on the Rocks. This is another film I reviewed on my blog. One of the worst parts about it is the film’s one-sided view of marriage and divorce. Personally, it made me feel uncomfortable.

                            3. Where would you most like to go when things fully open up again?

In several weeks, I’ll be taking an out-of-state trip. But to answer the question, it really all depends what season the world will be fully open in. If it’s in a warmer season, I might go to an outdoor venue. However, if the season is colder, that venue will likely be indoors.

                            4. Do you think your blog or blogging style has changed since you started? How?

After reading some of my earlier reviews, I’ve noticed how I used to provide simpler explanations for what I liked and didn’t like about a film. In my review of The Dark Knight, I only wrote two sentences about how I liked the pace. One of my newer reviews, for Alphaville, features a paragraph about how I liked the film’s cinematography.

                            5. What’s a skill you don’t have but wish you did?

For this question, I’ll say swimming and roller skating. While I wouldn’t consider myself a terrible swimmer, I don’t feel I’m as strong as I’d like to be. As for roller skating, I’ve always wanted to master this skill, but was never given the opportunity.

                            6. How much did you write before you became a blogger, and was it something that you enjoyed?

As I mentioned in answer number one, writing has always been a passion of mine. However, I didn’t often have the opportunity to write for myself. Blogging provides an excuse to do just that.

                            7. What’s one thing you wish current movies had more of? Less of?

More of: Whenever there is a male character with longer hair, I never see them put their hair up in a pony-tail or a “man bun”. This is something I’ve not only noticed in recent years, but also as I’ve watched and reviewed more films. I’d like to see more male characters with longer hair put their hair up.

Less of: This has more to do with movie marketing than the movies themselves. Personally, I’m tired of seeing posters with most of the film’s content thrown up in one image. Bigger blockbusters usually adopt this style, especially those from Disney. I’ll include the poster of Loves Takes Flight to serve as an example for this type of poster. I wish movie studios moved away from this type of movie poster and created ones that looked more like art.

                            8. Is there a character or film that you think actually deserves a remake or reboot?

I think a remake of Girls Just Want to Have Fun would be interesting! It could provide a reflection of how the world of dance has changed since the original film’s release.

                            9. Now that we’re at the height of summer (unless you live Down Under, of course), what’s your cold beverage of choice?

I’ve been drinking Pure Leaf raspberry tea lately. Therefore, I’ll chose this beverage for my answer.

                            10. You’ve been granted the ability to teleport into any video game or mobile app. Where are you going to go?

For as long as I could remember, I have always wanted to play a video game as my favorite character. But it is not often possible for me to do so. One example is the Game Boy Advance game for Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Kida is my favorite Disney princess. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t give me the option to choose which character I want to play as. So, I’d like to teleport to this game so I could play as my favorite member of Atlantean royalty!

                            11. You’re standing in front of the replicator on the Starship Enterprise. What do you ask for first?

I’d definitely ask to release the Tim Pope cut of The Crow: City of Angels! I don’t watch Star Trek, so I’m not sure if the Starship Enterprise would be able to make this happen. However, if the Snyder cut of Justice League is going to be released, anything is possible.

                            My 11 Answers

                            1. Which actor or actress do you think is overlooked by the public and what role would you like to see them in? For this question, I had to really think about who I would talk about. There are a number of actors and actresses that I believe are underrated. Some of them have been mentioned on 18 Cinema Lane before, like Max Lloyd-Jones. However, there are others that I haven’t found the opportunity to talk about yet. But, this time, I’ve decided to pick someone who I’ve previously brought up on my blog. According to her filmography on IMDB, Karina Arroyave has been acting in the film and television industry since the late ‘80s. However, it seems like she doesn’t receive the amount of recognition and attention that I think she deserves. As I’ve said in my Christmas Camp review, Karina has starred in two Hallmark Hall of Fame movies, Blind Spot from 1993 and Missing Pieces from 2000. But her roles in those films were smaller than what they could have been. One day, I’d like to see Karina cast in a Hallmark Hall of Fame film with a bigger role than she has received in years past.

                            1. If you could have a crossover between an anime and something involving Western animation, what would they be and what would the plot look like? When I read this question, I immediately thought of the Sailor Scouts from Sailor Moon teaming up with heroes from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)! Because the animated shows from Marvel follow a different story than the films, the Heart of the Universe would provide an interesting component to the plot. I’ve read online that the ‘Heart of the Universe’ is more powerful than the Infinity Gauntlet. Whether the ‘Heart of the Universe’ is a part of official Marvel canon is unknown to me. But it could create a way to raise the stakes for both programs.

                            1. What is your favorite thing about international cinema? I’d have to say being introduced to new people in the world of film! Before I started 18 Cinema Lane, I didn’t know who Vincent Perez was. Now, I’ve seen two of his films; Queen of the Damned and Swept from the Sea! This June, I’ll be reviewing the 1990 film, Cyrano de Bergerac, which I’m looking forward to because of Vincent’s involvement in the project!

                            1. If you could switch a theme song from a movie or TV series with a different song, what would it be and why? I have two choices for this question. The first is the theme music from Murder, She Wrote. To me, this piece of music doesn’t fit the tone of the show. It makes the program appear more cheerful than it really is. While there are light-hearted moments within the show, there can also be suspenseful and darker moments. I would change the theme music to something that sounds more mysterious. The second choice is The Crow: Stairway to Heaven. I’ve never watched the show, but I have seen a video of the show’s opening credits. I was surprised by the creative team’s choice not to use music from the 1994 film. For this show, I’d select a song directly from the movie.

                            1. What book would you like to see adapted onto the screen? This could be a novel or comic book, by the way. I’ve mentioned this on 18 Cinema Lane before, but I’ll say it again. I would love to see Murder on Ice by Alina Adams become a Hallmark Movies & Mysteries film! If you want to learn why I feel this way, you can read my Movie Blogger’s Christmas Wish-List at this link:

                            1. What band would you like to see compose an entire soundtrack? What kind of movie would they score? My favorite band is Trans-Siberian Orchestra! While their music was featured in the movie, The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, I really want to see them create a soundtrack for a Christmas movie musical for Hallmark Hall of Fame!

                            1. What is the least favorite thing from a creator you really like? Some of my favorite youtubers from the movie community host scheduled livestream videos. Unfortunately, there have been times when these videos have started late at night or lasted two+ hours. It also doesn’t help that I can’t pause the video while it’s live, as I end up missing important content. So, I either skip the video completely or watch it on a later date.

                            1. Who would you like to see voicing over a documentary that has never done so before? What would the documentary be about? Even though Disney+ is hosting Wandavision, it would be fascinating to see a mockumentary about Sokovia. It also makes sense for Elizabeth Olsen to provide the project’s voice-over, especially since we haven’t heard her speak in a Sokovian accent while portraying Wanda/Scarlet Witch in quite some time.

                            1. Which actor would sound ridiculous if they tried an accent outside of their own? I don’t know if it would sound ridiculous, but I’ve never heard Vin Diesel attempt an accent.

                            1. Who do you think is the most overrated film or animation director? Personally, I would say Steven Soderbergh is overrated as a director. Granted, I only saw Logan Lucky. But I couldn’t finish the movie, as I disliked it that much.

                            1. What is your greatest wish for cinema and/or animation? This could be realistic or a pipe dream. I will select two wishes for this question. Whether they’re realistic or just a dream is up for debate. The first is for the more underrated people in the entertainment industry to receive more recognition and attention then they might currently have. The second is for the full version of The Crow: City of Angels to be released. The Youtube channel, GoodBadFlicks, created a really good video about this film called “Exploring The Crow City of Angels”. I’ve only watched half of it, but it’s an informative piece on the “studio intervention” that heavily effected this movie. Because of the growing awareness and drive to restore lost media/films, I feel the release of the full version of The Crow: City of Angels could be possible.

My Answers to Zoe’s 11 Questions:

                            1. What is the strangest or most off-brand topic/thing you’ve blogged about?

Out of all the 325 articles I’ve ever published, there’s only two I can think of that are the closest to being off-brand. The first is my entry for the Murder, She Wrote Cookalong. While I have talked about Murder, She Wrote before, that was the first and, so far, only time I ever talked about cooking on my blog. The second is my review for California Angel by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg. Yes, I occasionally talk about books on 18 Cinema Lane. However, this was the only time where my review was completely negative. In the case where I review a movie I don’t like, I always try to share the things I liked about it. This is to show my readers how to find the good in almost any film. When it comes to California Angel, I just couldn’t find anything good to say about it. If you want to check out these articles, I’ll provide the links to them here:

                            2. Who or what inspired you to start blogging?

I’ve shared this before, but I’m more than happy to share it again! In R.J. Palacio’s book, Wonder, Auggie says “Everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their life because we all overcometh the world”. That quote is what gave me the initiative to start 18 Cinema Lane! It also has become a statement that I try my best to follow as I continue to blog. With 176 followers, it looks like Auggie’s message has resonated with others as well!

                            3. & 4. Recast one of your favorite classic movies (pre 1970s) with modern actors & Recast one of your favorite modern movies with classic actors

For questions three and four, I decided to take a different approach. Instead of picking my favorite movies (because the acting is one of the reasons why they’re my favorites), I picked two movies that I didn’t dislike, but could be improved with certain casting choices. The movie I chose for question number three is Edward, My Son. In my review of that film, I shared that I wasn’t a fan of Edward’s absence. To correct this creative error, I would cast Charlie Plummer in that role. Because he’s in his early 20s, Charlie would be old enough to portray Edward in his teenage and young adult years. Also, he has a good amount of experience acting in films and television shows.

The film I chose for question number four is The Christmas Card. While this movie had stand-out performances, I feel the performances from the leads were not as strong or memorable as they could have been. So, I would switch them for Cary Grant and Carole Lombard. Two weeks ago, I reviewed In Name Only for the Carole Lombard Memorial Blogathon. While watching that film, I enjoyed seeing Cary and Carole’s individual performances and felt their on-screen chemistry was really good! If cast in The Christmas Card, I could totally see Cary portray a soldier in the military and Carole as the small-town woman with a big heart!

                            5. What is a book that you would love to see adapted into a film and why?

As I said in my post, A Movie Blogger’s Christmas Wish-List 2019, I would love to see Murder on Ice by Alina Adams become a Hallmark Movies & Mysteries film! In fact, I think it would be great if the entire Figure Skating Mystery series were adapted into a Hallmark Movies & Mysteries series! If you want to learn more about why I feel this way, check out my Wish-List at this link:

                            A Movie Blogger’s Christmas Wish-List 2019

                            6. What do you consider the biggest misstep behind the scenes in the cinema world (i.e. not casting someone for a role, a specific directorial choice, a remake that shouldn’t have happened, an interview that went on to haunt someone, etc.)

In the mid to late ‘90s, Dreamworks devoted a lot of time, effort, and talent to one of their earlier releases, The Prince of Egypt. Because of this, it caused another project of theirs, The Road to El Dorado, to become an afterthought. This led to the movie receiving several setbacks, from a delayed release to a poor advertising campaign. These things resulted in a box office failure. If Dreamworks had given both films an equal amount of attention, maybe they both would have been successful. Years after these missteps, however, The Road to El Dorado is remembered more fondly than The Prince of Egypt. So, I guess The Road to El Dorado didn’t completely lose.

                            7. What do you consider the most fascinating film community scandal (past or present)?

In 2013, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return arrived in theaters to scathing reviews and a disastrous box office. At that time, however, the public wasn’t aware of the behind-the-scenes issues that led to the movie’s premiere. Years later, it was revealed that the entire operation was a scam. As of 2019, a lawsuit was filed against the creators of the film. If this lawsuit turns into an official case, more legal action could take place. Despite all of this happening, very few people have shed light on this situation. If you’re interested in learning more about this incident, AniMat, from the Youtube channel, ElectricDragon505, created two very informative and well documented videos about it on his channel. These videos are called “The History of Legends of Oz: Animation’s Biggest Scam” and “The UPDATED History of Legends of Oz: The Scam’s Return (including Noah Centineo)”.

                            8. Which actor or actress do you think died way too soon and where would you have liked to see their career go had they lived?

For this question, I have two choices. They are Heather O’Rourke and Judith Barsi. For those of you who don’t know, Heather portrayed Carol Anne in the Poltergeist trilogy and Judith provided the voices for Ducky in The Land Before Time and Ann-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven. Both of them passed away before they became teenagers. According to a post I found about Judith, she “loved voice acting, and wanted to do it into adulthood”. So, I’m guessing that, had she lived, Judith would have become a successful voice actress and probably one of the most beloved in that field. As for Heather, I honestly can’t say where her career would have gone. In a video from the Youtube channel, Daze with Jordan the Lion, it was said that Heather had a successful film and television career. Also, there’s always the possibility she could have fallen in love with a different profession. If you want to watch Jordan’s video, you can find it on their channel under the title, “#1185 What Happened to HEATHER O’ROURKE of POLTERGEIST Grave (11/4/19)”. You can also check out the post about Judith Barsi I referenced at this link:

                            9. Which actor or actress missed their calling in a specific genre and why do you think they would or would have excelled in this vein?

According to his IMDB filmography, Burl Ives has several voice acting credits to his name. However, most of these roles consist of narrating or singing a song. I think it would have been fascinating if Burl had devoted his acting career to voice acting. The characters he could have voiced and the movies he could have starred in would have been interesting!

                            10. Which 6 guests would you invite to your Hollywood party and why these specific 6?

After thinking it over, I chose these six people based on their impact on me or because I feel they deserve more recognition. These people are the following:

                            • Sebastian Stan (He portrays my favorite superhero in the MCU, Bucky Barnes)
                            • Vincent Perez (Despite watching only two of his movies, I’ve come to appreciate Vincent as an actor)
                            • Cree Summer (She provided the voice for Kida, my favorite Disney princess)
                            • R.J. Palacio (the author of Wonder)
                            • John Christian Plummer (one of the screenwriters of Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ Mystery 101 series and Charlie Plummer’s dad)
                            • Jonathan Hall Kovacs (he portrayed my favorite character from Little House on the Prairie, Matthew Rogers)

                            11. Which onscreen outfit would you wear everyday if you could and why did you pick this one?

I gave this last question a lot of thought. In the end, though, I chose the outfit Jesse wore in the climax of Queen of the Damned! The primary components of this outfit consist of a red tank top and a long black skirt with gold sequins and embroidery. What’s great about this outfit is how it’s a good choice for warmer weather. When it’s cold out, layers can be added to the outfit. If the weather is too hot, you can just stay indoors.

I Won My Second Blogger Recognition Award!

Last week, I received a special surprise from fellow blogger, Ospreyshire! They gave me my second Blogger Recognition Award! What a great way to start the new year! For those who don’t know, Ospreyshire created the blog, Iridium Eye Reviews. Films that don’t often get talked about are covered there. You might say that Ospreyshire is trying to give those projects their “standing ovation”. Before I list the rules for the Blogger Recognition Award, I just want to thank my nominator for their thoughtfulness. It’s nice to know that, in the movie blogging community, fellow bloggers look out for one another. If you want to read Ospreyshire’s articles or pay them a visit, here’s the link to their blog:

Now, it’s time for me to list the official rules, which are the following:

                            1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
                            2. Place the award banner somewhere on your blog
                            3. Share the story or history behind the creation of your blog.
                            4. Provide two or more pieces of advice for new bloggers.
                            5. Nominate 10 other bloggers and link their blogs.
                            6. Share the exciting news with your nominees

Since I completed the first and second rules, let’s move on to rule number three!

                            1. Because I have won this award before, I already shared the reason why I started 18 Cinema Lane. I also talked about this in my very first blog post. I’ll provide links to both of those articles:

                            1. The first piece of advice is to stay true to yourself. The internet is a vast and expanding place, filled with thousands of movie related content. But, when everything is said and done, there will only be one you. Create a blog and a series of posts that truly reflect the unique individual that you are. The second piece of advice I’ll give is to always be on the lookout for inspiration. For me, I turn to other forms of media when I’m searching for ideas for future blog posts. There have even been times where I’ve gotten inspiration from Youtube videos. Be open to any and every possibility where inspiration may present itself.

                            1. The next ten nominees who will receive the Blogger Recognition Award are the following:
