Take 3: Vertigo (1958) Review

Alfred Hitchcock is a man who needs no introduction. Director by choice and legend by chance, Alfred has single-handedly become a house-hold name in the world of cinema. While I have seen (and reviewed) some of his films, there are still plenty of titles I have yet to see. One of those films was 1958’s Vertigo, which was recommended by Charity from The Sacred in the Secular! This is a movie I had been meaning to write about for a while. With The 3rd Master Of Suspense Blogathon on its way, I found a great time to finally review Vertigo! As I already mentioned, I have reviewed some of Alfred’s films. While I still think Strangers on a Train is his best movie, The 39 Steps is one of my least favorite. Now, the time has come to share my thoughts on Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 presentation!

Things I liked about the film:

The use of music: Music can be a powerful film-making tool. Through a combination of sound, instrumentals, and even lyrics, music can elevate a scene’s mood, foreshadow parts of the story, or emphasize events happening in a scene. In Vertigo, music was utilized to compliment a scene’s given mood. A perfect example is when Scottie follows Madeleine to a flower shop. While he walks through a flower shop’s storage room, suspenseful orchestral music builds up to the moment Scottie reaches the flower shop’s door. This type of music acknowledges Scottie’s fear of the unknown, as he doesn’t know what he’ll find on the door’s other side. But once he opens the door, he discovers Madeleine is in a flower shop, purchasing a bouquet of flowers. This discovery causes calming, orchestral music to play in the background, stressing how Madeleine and the shop itself are nonthreatening to Scottie.

Incorporation of culture: The mystery in Vertigo revolves around Madeleine being obsessed with a woman named Carlotta Valdes. Scottie follows clues from art and local history in an attempt to solve the mystery. The “local history” in this movie is a fictionalized version of San Francisco’s history. However, the blending of these aforementioned cultural elements gave Vertigo a unique identity from other Hitchcock productions. The creative team’s incorporation of culture can also spark thought-provoking analysis about how culture can influence or even solve mysteries. As someone who reviews mystery films and even has a series called Sally Solves a Mystery, this aspect of Vertigo has made me look at the subject of mysteries somewhat differently.

The set design: There was some impressive set design in Vertigo! One of my favorite examples is Gavin’s office. Wood paneling covers every wall. The entire floor is covered in red carpeting, which actually compliments the wood paneling. A large, dark wood desk with intricate detailing becomes the showstopper of the space! Other design choices, such as a large model of a ship, red chairs, and a huge window overlooking the cargo ship dock emphasize Gavin’s importance in the company he inherited. Artwork and photographs covering every wall presents a glimpse into Gavin’s artistic taste.

What I didn’t like about the film:

Questions left unanswered: For this part of my review, I will spoil Vertigo. If you have not seen this movie and are planning on watching it, skip to the part titled ‘The underutilization of Barbara Bel Geddes’.

After Madeleine dies, Scottie meets a woman named Judy, believing she looks like his deceased love. Shortly after Judy and Scottie meet for the first time, she writes a letter and confesses being Madeleine. In the letter, Judy claims parts of the story she and Gavin told Scottie were true. But she never specifies which parts of their story they were honest about. The creative team’s decision to leave questions unanswered frustrated me. This is because I was curious to see how the mystery of Madeleine’s psychological connection to Carlotta Valdes would be resolved.

The underutilization of Barbara Bel Geddes: In Vertigo, Barbara Bel Geddes portrays Marjorie ‘Midge’ Wood. A designer who is passionate about art, Midge was engaged to Scottie in the past. Even though their engagement didn’t last, they remain on friendly terms. Barbara’s on-screen chemistry with James was pleasant. Her performance effectively sold the idea Midge was good friends with Scottie. This made me hope Scottie and Midge would work together to solve Vertigo’s mystery. But that did not happen because Barbara was only in a handle of scenes. I think Midge is an interesting character, so this creative decision disappointed me. Not giving Barbara more material to work with was, in my opinion, a missed opportunity.

An unsolved mystery: For this part of my review, I will, once again, spoil Vertigo. If you have not seen this movie and are planning on watching it, skip to the part titled ‘My overall impression’.

At the beginning of Vertigo, Scottie is asked by Gavin to solve the mystery of why Madeleine is obsessed with a woman named Carlotta Valdes. This obsession gets to the point where Madeleine goes to places she has no memories of visiting. Because of how the fictionalized San Francisco culture and supernatural elements were combined in the mystery, I was curious to see how the mystery would be resolved. But, about halfway through Vertigo, Madeleine dies. Shortly after Madeleine passes away, the mystery of Judy’s identity begins. By the end of the movie, this new mystery is solved. If the screenwriters knew their script would contain more than one mystery, they should have resolved the first mystery before moving on the next one. The creative team’s decision to abandon Madeleine’s mystery left several questions unanswered.

My overall impression:

Have you ever watched a movie where you found yourself deceived by the movie’s end? That’s how I felt after watching 1958’s Vertigo. Without spoiling the movie, I will say how even though the story contained two mysteries, only one of them is solved. This is one of the reasons why the script left questions unanswered. I also didn’t like how Barbara Bel Geddes’ acting talents were underutilized. However, there were aspects of Vertigo I liked. The film’s creative team displayed an understanding for how to effectively utilize music. Incorporating culture into the story gave Vertigo a unique identity among Hitchcock’s collection of films. I was impressed by the movie’s set design as well. But when it comes to titles created by Alfred Hitchcock, especially those starring James Stewart, I think Rear Window is stronger than Vertigo. Not only was the talent of Rear Window’s cast well utilized, the mystery was solved as well as prioritized.

Overall score: 6.5 out of 10

Take 3: The End of the Affair (1955) Review

When you have a show as iconic and successful as I Love Lucy, well-known guest stars are likely to pay the show a visit. On the aforementioned show itself, a collection of guest stars graced the screen, crossing paths with Lucy, Ricky, and their friends. One of those stars was Van Johnson, an actor I’m familiar with due to reviewing some of his films and his episodes of Murder, She Wrote. Since I haven’t written about any project from Van’s filmography since 2022, I found the I Love Lucy Blogathon as the perfect opportunity to check out another of his movies! A film of Van’s I’ve been meaning to review for years is the 1955 presentation, The End of the Affair. Recommended by Maddy from Maddy Loves Her Classic Films, I was intrigued by the mystery woven into the synopsis. Who is this third man Deborah Kerr’s character may be having a relationship with? The only way I was going to find an answer to that question is by watching The End of the Affair and sharing my honest opinion about it!

Things I liked about the film:

The acting: Like I mentioned in this review’s introduction, I have written about some of Van Johnson’s films as well as his episodes of Murder, She Wrote. What I’ve noticed from these projects is how Van has strong adaptability to his character’s experiences. This was also the case in The End of the Affair. While spending time with Deborah Kerr’s character, Sarah, Van’s character, Maurice, is all smiles and appears to be in a good mood. But when a neighbor named Mrs. Tomkins unexpectedly arrives to give Sarah some food, Maurice’s mood quickly changes. His eyes are downcast, not even looking at the neighbor. Maurice’s mouth displays a worried look as he frets over his secret relationship with Sarah being discovered. Even his tone of voice with Sarah is sharp, desperately trying to contain his feelings. This scene is just one example of Van’s versatility when it comes to his acting talents!

I was pleasantly surprised to discover Peter Cushing starred in The End of the Affair! Based on what I know about Peter’s career from his filmography, he either portrayed a character in a horror movie or he appeared for a limited period of time in a film. Comparing The End of the Affair with other projects of Peter’s I’ve seen, he was given a slightly larger role in the 1955 movie. My other observation is how his character, Henry, had a consistently friendly personality. Even when he suspects Sarah of having an affair, Henry’s demeanor is that of concern, with a worried look on his face. Speaking of Sarah, I want to discuss Deborah Kerr’s performance. In The End of the Affair, there were times when Deborah’s face said so much without the use of dialogue. A great example is when Sarah and Maurice reconnect after being apart for a year. During their walk together, fear shown through Sarah’s eyes. Her mouth was even tightly pursed, revealing little to no information to Maurice. In this scene, Sarah appears to keeping a secret, a secret she’s afraid might be discovered.

The mise-en-scène: Mise-en- scène is how a film’s scene is presented to the audience. One example from The End of the Affair is how mirrors were sometimes used as a form of foreshadowing. Toward the beginning of the film, Maurice spots Sarah hugging another man. She and the man can be seen through a near-by mirror. Because the creative team emphasized this interaction, Maurice’s suspicions of Sarah are hinted at. Later in the movie, when Sarah disappears from Maurice’s life, he calls her home, hoping she’ll pick up the phone. But every time Sarah is unavailable, the camera consistently shows a close-up of Maurice’s face, emphasizing his building frustration. This built-up frustration makes Maurice’s suspicions of Sarah grow even more. Because of how well mise-en-scène was utilized by the film’s creative team, the story was able to maintain a certain degree of intrigue.

The character of Albert Parkis: In movies like The End of the Affair, where serious topics are brought up, the detective character will usually carry a persona that matches the tone of the film. But in the 1955 movie, Albert Parkis provided a bright light to a darker story. Portrayed by John Mills, Albert was the private investigator hired by Maurice to solve the mystery of Sarah’s whereabouts. Any time he appeared on screen, Albert had such a cheerful, friendly personality. He sometimes brought his son along on investigations, in order to teach him how to solve mysteries. Albert’s interactions with Maurice were so lively, they were a joy to watch unfold. I wish Albert Parkis was given a larger role in The End of the Affair, as his involvement in the story was limited.

What I didn’t like about the film:

The “insta-love” trope: As I said earlier in this review, Maurice and Sarah share a secret romantic relationship. Their affair provides the basis for the film’s overarching conflict. But it was difficult for me to determine Van and Deborah’s on-screen chemistry. This flaw was due to the movie’s creative team choosing to adopt the “insta-love” trope. The beginning of the film shows Maurice being introduced to Sarah. In this introduction, Maurice hopes Sarah will provide insight to a book he’s writing. Several minutes later, they are starting to form their relationship. Sarah and Maurice even share a kiss within the first fifteen minutes of the story. With their relationship moving so quickly, I didn’t find myself as emotionally invested in Maurice and Sarah’s story as I could have been.

The underutilization of John Mills: When I talked about Albert Parkis, I said I wish he was given a larger role in The End of the Affair, as his involvement in the story was limited. This means the acting talents of John Mills were underutilized. On the film’s poster, you will see John Mills’ name listed as one of the top three billed actors in the production. However, this poster is somewhat misleading, as Peter Cushing receives more screen-time than John. After reviewing The Chalk Garden, I was looking forward to seeing another movie from John’s filmography. I was even curious about how John’s character’s story connected to Deborah’s character’s story. While I found out how these stories connected, I was disappointed by John’s limited involvement in the project.

A randomly produced reveal: The major conflict of The End of the Affair is figuring out the identity of the third man Sarah may be having a relationship with. I will not spoil this movie, in case any of my readers haven’t seen it yet. But what I will say is the mystery’s reveal was randomly produced. When Sarah’s secret is discovered, the answers are given toward the end of the story. Since there is no build-up leading into the reveal, the reveal itself almost feels like a major tonal shift. To prevent this flaw, information or clues related to the reveal should have been sprinkled throughout the movie. That way, the transition between the mystery and its reveal could have been smoother.

My overall impression:

Van Johnson is one of the reasons why I selected The End of the Affair, as he was a guest star on I Love Lucy. When it comes to his movies, I thought those I saw were mostly ok. The 1955 project is no different. I was disappointed by the underutilization of John Mills’ acting talents, as well as the adoption of the “insta-love” trope. The mystery’s randomly produced reveal felt like a major tonal shift. However, The End of the Affair does have its strengths. The acting alone was one of the highlights of the film, from Van’s versatility to Deborah’s ability to convey ideas without using dialogue. The way mise-en-scène was used by the creative team allowed the story to maintain a certain degree of intrigue. I also liked Albert Parkis as a character. When it comes to character-driven stories involving serious topics, I find The Chalk Garden and Hallmark Hall of Fame’s A Tale of Two Cities as stronger titles. But, so far, I’ve only seen a handful of Van’s movies, so maybe I need to keep looking for a film of his I like.

Take 3: Orca (1977) Review

When I participated in the first ‘Favorite Stars in B movies’ Blogathon two years ago, I reviewed the 1963 film, The Raven. I found Vincent Price’s picture to be a fine, likable one, which left me amazed how a simple story from Edgar Allan Poe could be turned into a feature presentation. For this year’s Third ‘Favorite Stars in B movies’ Blogathon, there were plenty of movies from Vincent Price’s filmography for me to choose from. But this time, I decided to go in a different direction. As I looked back at the history of my blog, I came to realize none of Richard Harris’ films have been covered on 18 Cinema Lane. I also remembered how the 1977 movie, Orca, was recommended to me by Eric Binford (from Diary of a Movie Maniac). With these two facts in mind, I found the perfect title to write about for the Third ‘Favorite Stars in B movies’ Blogathon! When Eric suggested Orca to me, he said the film steals from Jaws. Because I’ve seen the 1975 blockbuster, I imagined Orca to be a knock-off/rip-off of the iconic movie. But is the 1977 picture a copy of Jaws? Let’s dive into this review and find out!

Things I liked about the film:

Richard Harris’ performance: Because Richard Harris is one of the reasons why I chose to review Orca, I will now take the time to highlight his performance. In the 1977 movie, Richard portrays Captain Nolan, a fisherman who desires catching a whale in order to receive a large sum of money. His versatile acting abilities helped create a multi-layered character, one that is both tragic and complicated. After killing a pregnant whale, Nolan is very remorseful of his actions. One evening, he confides with Rachel Bedford (portrayed by Charlotte Rampling) over how he’d apologize to the dead whale’s mate. During this confession, Nolan adopts a somber look on his face, his eyes on the verge of tears. He even boasts a long frown. Nolan’s tone of voice is serious, sounding like he’s pleading for forgiveness. This one exchange presents a perfect example of Richard using his acting talents to bring his character to life!

An introduction to Orca Whales: Toward the beginning of the movie, Rachel Bedford lectures a group of students (and the film’s audience) about Orca Whales. This lecture is packed with information, from an explanation of the word ‘orca’ in Latin to showing a picture of an Orca fetus. On Captain Nolan’s boat, Annie (portrayed by Bo Derek) shares with Nolan how Orca Whales stay with their mate for life. He even receives a book from Rachel about whales in mythology. While some of the movie’s information may be dated (due to what’s been discovered about Orcas since the film’s release), it does provide an introduction to Orca Whales. Including this information into the script feels like the creative team made an effort to educate their audience.

Tonal variety in music: One of the most iconic pieces of music in film history is the theme from Jaws. John Williams’ score and the image of the titular shark sneaking up on its victims created a perfect, memorable combination. But compared to Orca, this piece of music seems to sensationalize the shark itself, as the suspenseful tune is the only music heard whenever the shark comes around. The first shot of the 1977 picture shows a group of Orcas swimming in their natural habitat. Peaceful, orchestral music plays in the background anytime whales are, simply, gliding from place to place. The only time suspenseful music is heard is when the titular Orca is causing chaos and destruction. This creative choice emphasizes how the whale has been provoked. Tones between different pieces of music show that while Orca Whales can have dangerous behavior, they can also be a great source of fascination.

What I didn’t like about the film:

Inconsistent voice-overs: In Orca, Rachel narrates what is happening in the story. I actually liked this creative decision, especially since she was one of the most educated characters when it came to Orca Whales. What I didn’t like was how Rachel’s voice-overs were inconsistent. In fact, she only narrated about three times throughout the one hour and thirty-two-minute film. Had these voice-overs been more consistent, they could have been used as a bridge between scenes.

The underutilization of Will Sampson: Another reason why I wanted to review Orca is Will Sampson’s involvement in the project. After seeing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The White Buffalo, I was looking forward to watching another movie from Will’s filmography. When I finally checked out Orca, I was disappointed by how Will’s acting talents were underutilized. Not only did he appear in the film for a limited amount of time, he also received very few lines in the script. I, honestly, wish Will’s character, Jacob, had played a larger in the story, especially since he shared great insight about Orca Whales.

Limited character development: The story of Orca primarily revolves around the battle between the titular whale and Nolan. Because of this creative decision, Nolan becomes the only (human) character to receive character development. Other characters are simply known by their profession or an experienced scenario. Rachel is characterized as the scientist who is educated about Orca Whales. Annie is known as the lady who broke her leg. I understand there is only so much story to tell in one hour and thirty-two-minutes. However, I still believe a little more character development should have been included in the script.

My overall impression:

In the introduction of my review, I said I imagined Orca to be a knock-off/rip-off of Jaws. But now I have seen the 1977 picture, calling it that does the film a disservice. I never got the impression Orca’s creative team was intentionally trying to copy the 1975 blockbuster. Instead, the film serves as a cautionary tale of how one’s actions toward animals and their natural environment have consequences. As I said in my review, including information about Orca Whales into the script feels like the creative team made an effort to educate their audience. This is different from Jaws, where (as far as I remember) education about sharks was far and few between. With that said, I wonder what would have happened if Orca had received anywhere near as much attention as Jaws? On the one hand, society’s perspective and treatment of Orca Whales may have changed much sooner. More knowledge and awareness may have already been reached before the 21st century. But, seeing how much merchandising and commercialism Jaws has produced in a fifty-year timespan, maybe Orca’s intended message would have gotten lost among the shuffle.

Sally Watches…Highway to Heaven

Have you read a synopsis for a movie or television episode that sounded so “bonkers” or over-the-top, you just had to check it out? That’s what happened when I came across the Highway to Heaven episode, “Ghost Rider”. I’ve seen enough episodes of this show to have an idea of what to expect. But then I read the synopsis for “Ghost Rider” on Hallmark Family’s website, which is the following:

“A lonely female novelist is in love with a legendary spy hero who has been dead for 20 years. She buys his sports car, that is being auctioned off, only to find out that his ghost comes with the car.”

For the 11th Annual Favourite TV Show Episode Blogathon, I had an excuse to not only check out “Ghost Rider”, but to also write about it. However, just because a movie or tv episode sounds “bonkers”, doesn’t mean it will be. Two examples from 18 Cinema Lane are the Lifetime movie, Sea Change, and the 1977 picture, The White Buffalo. Will “Ghost Rider” prove to be as “bonkers” as it sounds? Let’s travel down the highway of this review!

Premiere Date: April 1st, 1987

What I liked about this episode:

As I mentioned in this review’s introduction, the synopsis for “Ghost Rider” sounded “bonkers”, due to the story containing a car inhabited by a ghost. But that was not the primary focus of the story. Instead, the creative team behind Highway to Heaven placed more emphasis on Mark and Jonathan helping Birdy Belker. Birdy is a mystery writer who is not only interested in espionage, she’s obsessed with a special agent named Roger Bolt. Jonathan and Mark attempt to give Birdy the courage to live a more satisfying life, one where she can thrive and tell her own tales of adventure. Birdy’s story reminded me of Tracy’s story from the Touched by an Angel episode, “Perfect Little Angel”. A similarity between these episodes is how a major theme is being brave enough to reach your potential.

What I didn’t like about this episode:

Toward the beginning of the episode, Jonathan explains to Mark (and the audience) who Birdy is and why she needs their help. This explanation is presented as a voice-over, as if Jonathan were talking about events from a story in the mystery/noir genre. The voice-over was a good creative choice, making the episode unique from others of Highway to Heaven. However, this voice-over was included in only one part of the story. I wish that creative element was more consistently incorporated into the episode, with Jonathan’s voice-over appropriately fitting Birdy’s interest in espionage.

The story itself:

When I talked about what I liked about “Ghost Rider”, I said the story placed more emphasis on Jonathan and Mark helping Birdy develop the courage to reach her potential. While the episode features a car inhabited by a ghost, these elements were woven together in a way that fit within the established brand/tone of Highway to Heaven. The reason for Birdy possessing the car was because Mark encouraged her to purchase it, in an effort to help her find a new perspective on life. The ghost’s existence in the story had less to do with haunting and more to do with their place in the Afterlife. There was also a creative approach to the type of story about “never meeting your heroes”. In the case of “Ghost Rider”, the reality of who Roger Bolt was affects Birdy’s fantasy of him.

The other factors from this episode:

  • I already mentioned in this review how Birdy is a mystery writer. However, she uses the pen name ‘Natasha Gudonov’. When you say that last name quickly, it sounds like “good enough”. This joke is even acknowledged by the ghost after they learn more about Birdy. Personally, I found the joke to be the most cringe-worthy part of this episode.
  • In a typical Highway to Heaven episode, Jonathan will reveal his true identity as an angel toward the end of the story. He will discreetly use his angelic abilities throughout the episode as well. But in “Ghost Rider”, Jonathan is more honest with Birdy, sharing the truth about himself shortly after they meet. He’s even straightforward about his angelic abilities. I liked this change in storytelling! It gave “Ghost Rider” some creativity and allowed the story to stand out from other Highway to Heaven episodes!
  • For this part of my review, I will be spoiling “Ghost Rider”. If you have not seen this episode and are interested in watching it, skip ahead to the part of my review titled “my overall thoughts”.

Earlier in this review, I said there was a creative approach to the type of story about “never meeting your heroes”. In “Ghost Rider”, Birdy receives the opportunity to meet Roger Bolt, as he is the ghost inhabiting the car she purchases. During this initial meeting, Jonathan reveals how, during Roger’s life, he was an arrogant womanizer. This information shocks Birdy. However, earlier in the episode, Birdy tells Jonathan and Mark how she knows everything about Roger. With that said, wouldn’t Birdy have known about Roger’s true persona?

My overall thoughts:

In my review’s introduction, I talked about wanting to check out “Ghost Rider” because of the synopsis on Hallmark Family’s website. But looking back on this episode, I feel that synopsis does the story a disservice. Yes, a story of a ghost inhabiting a car sounds “bonkers” on paper. How that concept was incorporated into “Ghost Rider”, let alone Highway to Heaven, actually worked better than I expected! As I said in my review, more emphasis was placed on Mark and Jonathan helping Birdy thrive in life. This part of the story, along with the ghost inhabiting the car, fit within the established brand/tone of the show. “Ghost Rider” does have its flaws, such as Jonathan’s voice-over being inconsistent. But, overall, I found this episode to be fine and pleasant!

Rating: A 3.5 out of 5

Take 3: The Phantom of the Opera (1925) Review (Silent Pioneers Double Feature Part 2)

In my review of 1920’s The Garage, I admitted silent films are rarely covered on 18 Cinema Lane. Acknowledging the one hundredth anniversary of a movie is even rarer. This is a reason why I selected 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera for the Silent Pioneers Blogathon! But reviewing this film also presents a full circle moment for me. Before 2025, I had seen pieces of The Phantom of the Opera from 1925. That’s because those pieces are featured at the beginning of Phantom of the Megaplex (which happens to be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year). As a fan of that movie, I felt I owed it to myself to finally check out the film that paved the way for countless cinematic projects. Though this is my first time seeing 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera in its entirety, I am familiar with its story. This is due to seeing parts of 2004’s adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. So, without further delay, let’s start this review!

Things I liked about the film:

Color coded film: Silent films have a reputation for appearing in black and white. But in The Phantom of the Opera, only the Phantom’s lair is presented in this hue. This is because the Paris Opera House is color coded based on where a scene takes place. Outdoor scenes appear in blue. Scenes taking place backstage, and even a ballet performance, are presented in pink. The only scenes fully in color are those during the Bal Masque de l’Opera. Color coding the movie’s scenery gives each part of the story its own distinct significance. It definitely gives The Phantom of the Opera a unique identity!

The acting: When you think of 1925’s The Phantom of the Opera, you think of Lon Chaney. Though he spent the movie with his face covered by make-up or a mask, Lon utilized the use of his eyes and body language to give the Phantom emotion. During the Bal Masque de l’Opera, the Phantom discovers someone betrayed his trust. His eyes not only appear very wide, they even look pained. The Phantom falls back in his seat, emphasizing how shocked he is by the betrayal. Even though Lon stole the show, there are other performances I liked in The Phantom of the Opera! Mary Philbin portrays Christine Daae. Through a variety of acting techniques, Mary shows the audience what her character is thinking and feeling. A perfect example is when Christine meets the Phantom for the first time. Shocked by his appearance, she leans back against the wall, trying to move as far from him as possible. Christine’s eyes are wide and her jaw drops in horror, illustrating how unsettled she is by the Phantom.

The on-screen chemistry: As I just said in this review, Mary Philbin portrays Christine Daae. Throughout The Phantom of the Opera, Christine shares romantic feelings with Raoul, portrayed by Norman Kerry. When these characters shared moments together, their interactions were romantically tender. The love between Christine and Raoul feels like it radiates off the screen. Mary and Norman’s on-screen chemistry was very sweet, making their characters’ scenes together feel genuine. Their performances, as well as the screenwriting, made Raoul and Christine’s relationship one of the best parts of The Phantom of the Opera! I wish Mary and Norman shared more scenes together.

What I didn’t like about the film:

Underutilized characters: There were a few underutilized characters in The Phantom of the Opera. Two of them are the new owners of the Opera House. At the beginning of the movie, the ownership of the Opera House changed hands. Not only are the new owners informed of the Phantom’s existence, they are presented with evidence he actually exists. Yet, these owners don’t do anything to remove the Phantom from the Opera House or protect their business from the Phantom. A major reason for this is how the characters were underutilized, making limited appearances throughout the story.

Little sense of urgency: Like I said in my review, the new owners of the Opera House don’t do anything to remove the Phantom from the Opera House or protect their business from the Phantom. Any time the Phantom makes threats to ruin the show or even when Christine disappeared, there was little sense of urgency to prevent the Phantom’s chaotic plans. The day after Christine went missing, there was a newspaper article written about her disappearance. But no search party was organized to look for her. Even Raoul’s suspicions don’t appear raised when he receives a mysterious note from Christine. When Christine returns at the Bal Masque de l’Opera, no one notices except for Raoul. With all this said, the Phantom doesn’t seem as big of a concern to the Opera House’s community as he should be.

Unanswered questions: For this part of my review, I will spoil The Phantom of the Opera. If you haven’t seen this film and are planning on watching it, skip ahead to the part of my review titled ‘My overall impression’.

The 1925 version of The Phantom of the Opera attempts to give the Phantom a backstory. But this attempt leaves the audience with more questions than answers. On a notecard addressing the Phantom’s history, it states he is a “master of Black Art”. This statement is never given an explanation, especially since the Phantom isn’t shown adopting magic or supernatural powers. The notecard also states the Phantom was “exiled to Devil’s Island for criminal insane” and that he “escaped”. No explanation is provided why he was taken to the island in the first place. Did the Phantom actually commit a crime or was he falsely accused, with taking over the Opera House and causing chaos his form of revenge? These are two examples of unanswered questions in The Phantom of the Opera.

My overall impression:

1925’s The Phantom of the Opera is considered a classic, not just from the Silent Film Era, but within film history. So, imagine my shock when I discovered the movie was never included on any of American Film Institute’s 100 movies lists. When this film was first released, it brought something new to cinema’s table. The Phantom of the Opera paved the way when it came to the power of make-up. The 1925 picture also showed the world the expansive nature of storytelling through a cinematic lens. This is why, in my opinion, the story of the Phantom and his opera house is better suited for film than the stage. Lon Chaney is one of the most celebrated actors of all time. His role as the titular character proves why that statement holds true. Lon’s ability to transform into the Phantom makes his performance captivating. Beyond the make-up, he effectively uses his eyes and body language to bring emotion to his character. Though the film has its flaws, The Phantom of the Opera still holds up, even a hundred years later. Color coding for each area of the Opera House gave the production a unique identity, as well as distinct significance to these spaces. In a world where silent films are not as common as they once were, I’m thankful for the restoration efforts made for The Phantom of the Opera.

Overall score: 7.5-7.6 out of 10

Take 3: The Garage (1920) Review (Silent Pioneers Double Feature Part 1)

Before participating in the Silent Pioneers Blogathon, I had only seen, and even reviewed, four projects from Buster Keaton’s filmography. To, kind of, make up for lost time, I chose to review The Garage for the event. The other reason why I selected this movie was because it was recommended by Lea S. from Silent-ology. I will admit silent films are rarely covered on 18 Cinema Lane. In the seven years my blog has existed, I’ve only reviewed seven silent film titles. The last time I wrote about a silent picture was 1920’s Pollyanna back in 2021. So, reviewing another silent movie has been long overdue. So far, my experience with silent films has been pretty positive. But will that change with The Garage? Keep reading my review to find out!

Things I liked about the film:

The acting: In silent films, actors and actresses heavily rely on facial expressions, emotions, and body language to show what their characters are thinking and feeling. While on-screen text can help elaborate what is happening on screen, the way actresses and actors appear in a silent film can show what can’t be said. At the beginning of The Garage, Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle is upset Buster Keaton made a car he just washed dirty. He gestured toward the spot of dirt on the car by repeatedly pointing toward it. Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle even has a frown on his face, emphasizing how upset he is. Later in the film, Buster is chased by a dog. When he gets stuck in a fence, he appears scared as the dog is ripping up his pants. Fear is in Buster’s eyes as he looks to be screaming. Molly Malone is the only actress in The Garage. Any time she was included in a scene, she was just as expressive as her male co-stars! When Molly is first introduced in the story, she is so excited to see Jim. She is smiling the entire time, making her happiness clearly visible.

The slapstick comedy: When I reviewed The Twilight Zone episode, “Once Upon a Time”, I talked about a scene where Buster’s character, Woodrow, and a man named Rollo walk past a rack of suit pants. After Woodrow grabs a pair of pants, Rollo picks Woodrow up so he can put the pants on. When I saw this comedic trick in The Garage, I was happy to recognize it from The Twilight Zone! The trick was just as well performed in the movie as in the television episode! Another comedic trick utilized a piece of spinning floor. When Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle walked on the spinning floor, he was able to effortlessly walk off the circle. But, when Buster got on the spinning floor, he stumbled and tumbled to the ground. The only way Buster could escape was when Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle tumbled to the ground himself and pulled Buster to the circle’s edge. These two examples showcased the simplicity and creativity of The Garage’s slapstick comedy!

An overarching narrative: Earlier in this review, I brought up how excited Molly was to see Jim. This is because they are in a romantic relationship. In The Garage, Jim and Molly’s relationship served as an overarching narrative. It even intersected with the events taking place in and around the garage. For me, I looked forward to seeing what would happen next with Molly and Jim. The strong acting performances and nice on-screen chemistry kept me invested in their part of the story! There was also a sense of mystery to Jim and Molly’s relationship. A contributing factor was the couple experiencing situations as they took place in the film.

What I didn’t like about the film:

Inconsistent slapstick comedy: The Garage consists of three separate stories: Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle washing a customer’s car, Jim becoming covered in car grease, and the garage being set on fire. While there was plenty of slapstick comedy in the first and third stories, the slapstick comedy was limited in the second story. This is because so much of that story was focused on Jim and his relationship with Molly. Besides becoming dirty from car grease, Jim gets a dog to scare off Molly’s potential admirers. With everything I said, the emphasis on Jim and Molly’s relationship in the second story kind of overshadowed Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle and Buster Keaton.

Tonally inappropriate music: Like I just said in this review, there are three stories in The Garage. The third story involves the garage being set on fire. During that story, cheery piano music can be heard in the background. Though this type of music plays throughout the movie, it felt tonally inappropriate in the third story. The reason is Jim and Molly’s lives being in danger, which raises the story’s stakes. Because the stakes are lower in the first and second stories, cheery music playing in the background makes sense.

A confusing timeline: So much is happening in The Garage due to the film consisting of three separate stories. In one story, customers either rent cars or have their cars washed. The residents from the garage’s neighborhood have a scheduled lunch-time. But the title-cards sprinkled throughout the film never clarify when events like the aforementioned two take place. Is The Garage set in a singular day or are the situations happening over an extended period of time? Had the title-cards mentioned when events were taking place, those title-cards could have provided transitions between stories.

My overall impression:

As I said in my review’s introduction, my experience with silent films has been pretty positive. This experience is, so far, remaining positive due to my thoughts on The Garage! For the most part, the 1920 picture is a fine, pleasant production. The strength of the acting and the creativity of the slapstick comedy led to an overall enjoyable time. I even liked how Molly and Jim’s relationship served as an overarching narrative. Even though the film itself was pleasant, it did contain some flaws. Without contextual information, I found the story’s timeline confusing. There was also one part of the movie where the music was tonally inappropriate. But like I said, I found The Garage a fine, pleasant title! This movie could be a good introduction to Buster Keaton’s filmography.

Overall score: 7.1 out of 10

Take 3: Tarzan in Manhattan Review

During my search for my “so bad, it’s good” movie, I’ve learned to find two things: a film that is built on a gimmick and a film that is unintentionally funny. Though these things have helped me get one step closer to finding my “so bad, it’s good” movie, a film has yet to earn that coveted title. For the annual So Bad It’s Good Blogathon, I had several selected movies to choose from. But, in the end, I picked the 1989 film, Tarzan in Manhattan! That title alone gives away the project’s gimmick; an iconic character existing in a more contemporary setting. Based on the movie’s synopsis, there seems to be elements that could be unintentionally funny, such as Jane becoming more street-smart when she’s usually known for being book-smart. But what made me ultimately select Tarzan in Manhattan for the So Bad It’s Good Blogathon were the reviews on IMDB. According to what I read, it seemed like the movie’s creative team didn’t take their project seriously because they acknowledged the film’s gimmick. With all of that said, let’s see if this movie could become my “so bad, it’s good” film!

Things I liked about the film:

The acting: When I reviewed The Chalk Garden earlier this month, I said I was invested in the story because of the acting performances’ quality. I also said each acting performance was good for different reasons. In Tarzan in Manhattan, the cast made a strong effort to make their performances as entertaining as possible. In my opinion, these efforts worked, as their performances kept me invested in the story! Joe Lara used emotion well while portraying the titular character. A great example comes from the first ten minutes of the movie. Tarzan experiences a tragedy, as he discovers someone close to him passed away. Upon making this discovery, Tarzan is understandably upset. His eyes are brimming with tears and his mouth presents a frown. Quickly realizing what possibly happened, Tarzan’s sadness turns into anger within seconds. He then grits his teeth and the rest of his facial features become tense.

Kim Crosby portrays Jane in Tarzan in Manhattan. In my review’s introduction, I pointed out how Jane became more street-smart. Because of this creative decision, Kim adopts a down-to-earth, laid-back personality she consistently carried throughout the movie. When Jane meets Tarzan, she’s unfazed by the situation. Her whole persona presented the idea she, as a cab driver, has seen it all. Portraying Jane’s father, Archimedes, is Tony Curtis. Similar to Kim’s performance, Tony’s on-screen no-nonsense attitude was consistent. What also worked in Tony’s favor was how believable his on-screen interactions were. Anytime Archimedes and Jane shared a conversation, it felt like a realistic discussion between father and daughter. The strength of Kim’s and Tony’s acting talents helped make that possible!

Respect toward the source material: While I haven’t read the book Tarzan in Manhattan is based on, I have seen another adaptation of the Tarzan story. Based on that experience, it appears the creative team of the 1989 film made efforts to respect the source material their project is based on. Remember when I said in this review’s introduction how Jane became more street-smart when she’s usually known for being book-smart? It is true she is street-smart in Tarzan in Manhattan. However, the book-smart aspect of her character actually worked in harmony with the street-smarts. Around the time she and Tarzan first meet, Jane shares how she has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from NYU. Her book-smarts, along with problem-solving skills, help Tarzan find an important clue in figuring out Cheetah’s whereabouts. Throughout his New York City trip, Tarzan carries a bag of expensive jewelry as a form of currency. It is revealed the collection of jewelry belonged to Tarzan’s parents, the Lord and Lady of Greystone, before they passed away.

How humor was incorporated: I mentioned in my review’s introduction how Tarzan in Manhattan’s IMDB reviews were the reason I chose the film for the So Bad It’s Good Blogathon. Based on those reviews, it seemed the movie’s creative team didn’t take their project seriously because they acknowledged the film’s gimmick. As I watched the 1989 picture, I could detect a sense of self-awareness. From the dialogue to the “Easter Eggs”, it felt like the movie’s creative team recognized how much of a gimmick their project was built on. During the plane ride to New York City, Tarzan is reading a book about surviving in New York on five dollars a day. This “Easter Egg” calls out how expensive the Big Apple can be. After somersaulting his way into a locked room, Tarzan leaves that same room by escaping through an open window. This situation causes Archimedes to ask Jane why Tarzan can’t leave through the door like other people. The aforementioned self-awareness in Tarzan in Manhattan made comedic moments genuinely hilarious!

What I didn’t like about the film:

Things that don’t make sense: There were some parts of Tarzan in Manhattan that didn’t make sense. One example takes place toward the beginning of the film. Within the first five minutes of the story, Tarzan is shown living a secluded life from civilization, how Tarzan is usually portrayed in other adaptations. Then, all of a sudden, a man named Joseph shows up to give Tarzan and Cheetah a pair of books. Based on their interaction, it seems like Joseph and Tarzan’s friendship has lasted even before the events of the movie. If Tarzan lives close enough to civilization where walking to Joseph’s store is possible, why does he still live isolated in the jungle?

Inconsistent sense of urgency: A reason why Tarzan travels to New York City is to rescue Cheetah. This part of the film’s synopsis would warrant a sense of urgency throughout the story. But Tarzan, along with Jane and Archimedes, don’t figure out what likely happened to Cheetah until more than twenty minutes into an hour and thirty-four-minute film. While there is a sense of urgency in Tarzan in Manhattan, it appears at certain moments in the movie. These creative choices made the story’s sense of urgency inconsistent.

Part of the story that doesn’t lead anywhere: On more than one occasion, the audience is reminded how Tarzan is the son of the Lord and Lady of Greystone. Jane even purchases a book featuring his family’s portrait. I appreciate the creative team’s efforts to respect the source material their project is based on. However, the part of the film about Tarzan’s family history didn’t lead anywhere. The story’s main conflict had nothing to do with the Greystone estate. Tarzan’s family weren’t even featured in a subplot. I wish that part of Tarzan in Manhattan had a stronger connection to the overall story.

My overall impression:

When I started this review, I said I learned to find two things when looking for my “so bad, it’s good” movie; a film that is built on a gimmick and a film that is unintentionally funny. Tarzan in Manhattan is definitely built a gimmick, with enough self-awareness in the movie to acknowledge this. But what the film isn’t is unintentionally funny. The way the story’s humor was written and delivered gave the audience a reason to laugh with the creative team, not at them. Humorous moments felt like they were intended to be comedic. This is one of the reasons why Tarzan in Manhattan was as entertaining as it was! Though there were flaws in the 1989 picture, there were aspects of the project I liked. A few examples are the acting performances and the on-screen chemistry between Joe Lara and Kim Crosby. Even though moments with high-stakes and a sense of urgency are sprinkled throughout the story, Tarzan in Manhattan is, for the most part, silly and goofy fun. Out of all the movies I reviewed for the So Bad It’s Good Blogathon, I’d say Tarzan in Manhattan is the best one. So, when it comes to finding my “so bad, it’s good” movie, I ended up taking a detour this time.

Take 3: Million Dollar Mermaid Review

From Esther Williams’ filmography, I’ve only seen (and reviewed) three of her pictures; Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Bathing Beauty, and Easy to Wed. When it comes to the aqua musical, one of Esther’s claims to fame, that component was far and few between in those movies. Wanting to see an Esther Williams production where the aqua musical was more center stage (no pun intended), I selected Million Dollar Mermaid to review for the We Love Musicals Week Blogathon! The 1952 presentation was recommended by The Classic Movie Muse. Before researching titles to write about for Hamlette’s (from Hamlette’s Soliloquy) event, I had no idea the movie was a biopic. As I made this discovery, I was reminded how much luck I had finding good biopics last year. On my list of the best movies I saw in 2024, three biopics earned a spot on my list, with two of those films ending up in my top five. Could Million Dollar Mermaid find a place on 2025’s best movies list? Read my review to find out!

Things I liked about the film:

The acting: As I said in this review’s introduction, I’ve seen (and reviewed) three of Esther Williams’ films; Easy to Wed, Take Me Out to the Ball Game, and Bathing Beauty. What these titles have in common is how Esther’s on-screen personality has been consistently friendly and warm. Her performance in Million Dollar Mermaid maintains that consistency in personality! Esther portrays Annette Kellerman, an Australian swimmer who defied the odds and created a successful career. Through the ups and downs of Annette’s life, Esther’s on-screen personality highlighted how Annette saw the glass half full. However, there were times when Annette became frustrated. In one scene, she is understandably upset because she was falsely accused of indecent exposure (due to the style of her swimsuit). At first, Annette tearfully refuses to speak with any newspaper reporter. But after receiving advice from her father and James Sullivan, courage rises in Annette’s voice as she not only agrees to be interviewed, she decides to be interviewed while wearing her swimsuit. With Esther adopting a variety of emotions and expressions throughout her performance, she brought humanity back to Annette’s name!

Speaking of Annette’s father, let’s talk about Walter Pidgeon’s character, Frederick Kellerman! Frederick was one of Annette’s biggest cheerleaders. Though he had his reasons for wanting to protect his daughter, Frederick led by example when it came to following dreams. But Annette’s father had his fair share of struggles. While waiting for Annette and James’ meeting to end, Frederick becomes exhausted. His eyelids continuously rise and fall as he sometimes slumps toward the ground. Visibly concerned, James’ associate, Doc (portrayed by Jesse White) suggests they return home. Scenes like this one showed how Walter brought believability to his role! Similar to Esther’s on-screen personality, Walter made the likability of his character consistent. This was achieved through a strong acting performance!

Victor Mature portrays James Sullivan in Million Dollar Mermaid. When he is first introduced on a boat ride to London, James’ showmanship is on full display. Quick witted and having a way with words, James knew an opportunity when he saw one. Though he had the charisma of a circus ring leader, James also had a caring side to him. In order to promote a new show, Annette agrees to swim through the Thames River. During the swim, James and Doc row alongside Annette. Toward the end of the swim, James notices how tired Annette appears. He’s also aware of an incoming current, which could push Annette back. A sharp tone in his voice, furrowed eyebrows, and an intense look in his eyes perfectly show how concerned James is for Annette’s wellbeing. These emotional elements emphasize James’ sense of urgency for protecting Annette as well. This scene is just one example of how Victor’s acting talents helped create a memorable portrayal of James Sullivan!

The dialogue: One of the challenges Annette had to overcome was polio. As a child, Annette wished she could dance with her peers inside of staying at home practicing the piano. To cheer his daughter up, Frederick says how music should be a source of joy. The way this line was written and spoken seemed so profound, it made me wonder if Frederick’s belief is the reason why some musicals are joyful in nature? Years later, Frederick accepts a job at a music conservatory. But once he and Annette move to London, they discover the conservatory is actually closed. Looking at the glass half full, Annette reminds her father how the conservatory’s gate is only one closed gate. While she was talking about the literal gate, she was also speaking figuratively, seeing it as yet another puzzle to solve. These are just two examples of how well-written the dialogue was in Million Dollar Mermaid!

The aqua musical numbers: I stated in the introduction of my Million Dollar Mermaid review how one of Esther’s claims to fame is the aqua musical. This type of unique musical presentation is another reason why I chose this film for the We Love Musicals Week Blogathon, as I wanted to bring something different to the event’s table. The aqua musical numbers in Million Dollar Mermaid were captivating! The blend of pyrotechnics, color, and aquatic choreography created musical spectacles that were close to perfection. In one number, Esther emerges from the water on a giant pillar covered with sparks. Another number shows Esther performing a ballet routine under water. My favorite number boasted a color scheme of red and yellow. A memorable part of that number was when swimmers jumped into the water from various swings. The aqua musical numbers were certainly one of the strengths of Million Dollar Mermaid!

What I didn’t like about the film:

Limited presence of aqua musicals: Like I mentioned in my review’s introduction, I wanted to watch an Esther Williams movie where the aqua musical was more center stage (again, no pun intended). This component received more inclusion in Million Dollar Mermaid than in Esther’s other three movies I’ve seen (and reviewed). However, the overall presence of aqua musicals seemed limited. In the 1952 film, there were three aqua musical numbers. Only one of them was shown in its entirety. It also doesn’t help how the first aqua musical number appears a little over an hour into an hour and fifty-five-minute movie. I recognize the film’s creative team tried their best to find a balance between providing musical spectacle and telling Annette’s story. But as someone who came to Million Dollar Mermaid for the aqua musical, I was, kind of, disappointed.

An open-ended finish: The intended purpose of a biopic is to tell the story of a historical or public figure. In the case of Million Dollar Mermaid, that figure is Annette Kellerman. Toward the end of a typical biopic, that story will either reach the conclusion of that figure’s life or explain what happened to the people involved in the story, through a voice-over or on-screen text. But Million Dollar Mermaid didn’t adopt any of these examples. Within the last ten minutes of the movie, a major conflict takes place. Because there’s not enough time to reach a resolution to this conflict, a resolution is not provided on screen. An explanation if a resolution was reached at all is not provided as well. These creative choices left some questions unanswered.

A confusing interaction: For this part of my review, I will spoil Million Dollar Mermaid. If you have not seen this movie and are planning on watching it, please skip ahead to the part of this review titled “my overall impression”.

James Sullivan becomes Annette’s manager in Million Dollar Mermaid. Over time, Annette and James develop romantic feelings for each other. But their relationship doesn’t last, as Annette ends up marrying a man named Alfred. Toward the end of the film, James visits Annette in the hospital after she experiences an accident on a movie set. He gives her the engagement ring he intended to give her years prior. Annette not only accepts the ring, she and James share a kiss. I was confused by this romantic exchange because Annette and Alfred already got married. I was also surprised Million Dollar Mermaid would include this romantic interaction, as it was released during the Breen Code era, where the reverence toward martial vows is upheld. But, like I said when talking about the film’s open-ended finish, some questions were left unanswered.

My overall impression:

Biopics are not created equally. Some of them are solid productions, like 1984’s Amadeus. But there have been biopics that left me underwhelmed, such as I Dream of Jeanie from 1952. With Million Dollar Mermaid, I thought it was just fine. The aqua musical numbers were a highlight of this presentation! As I said in my review, the blend of pyrotechnics, color, and aquatic choreography created musical spectacles that were close to perfection. However, I didn’t like how these aqua musical numbers had such a limited presence in the movie. I will admit I had no idea who Annette Kellerman was before watching Million Dollar Mermaid. Through the acting performances, screenwriting, and the story itself, I was introduced to this incredible woman and the world according to her. I do wish the ending hadn’t been so open-ended. Though I guess that’s what Wikipedia is for, finding answers that weren’t provided in the film. Prior to participating in the We Love Musicals Week Blogathon, the last time I reviewed one of Esther Williams’ films was back in 2022. So, re-visiting her filmography was long overdue.

Overall score: 7.1-7.2 out of 10

Take 3: Roman Holiday Review

Reviewing Roman Holiday is a full circle moment for me. Back in 2019, the Hallmark Channel movie, Rome in Love became one of the top three best films I saw that year. That movie was about a woman starring in a remake of Roman Holiday. I also read the book Rome in Love was based on. When I signed up for the Journey to Italy Blogathon, I was surprised no one had chosen the 1953 production. Because Roman Holiday is considered a “classic”, I would have expected the movie to be one of the first to be selected. So, I was grateful for the opportunity to check out the film! Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck are no strangers to 18 Cinema Lane. Some of their films have been covered on my blog. In fact, there’s been a few pictures I’ve liked; such as Funny Face, The Nun’s Story, and To Kill a Mockingbird. How does Roman Holiday compare to those movies? Find out in this review!

Things I liked about the film:

The acting: Roman Holiday introduced cinema’s audience to Audrey Hepburn as a lead actress. Not only that, the 1953 presentation earned Audrey an Oscar. Thinking about her portrayal of Princess Ann, I can understand why Audrey was, at least, nominated for an Academy Award! Even though this was her first starring role, Audrey proved her talents were strong enough to appear convincing. A great example happened when Princess Ann was sleepily wandering around Rome. Through her wanderings, Princess Ann meets Joe Bradley (portrayed by Gregory Peck). The stumbling and mumbling of Princess Ann make her look drunk. Even Joe thinks Princess Ann had too much to drink, due to her speech sounding slurred and her eyelids consistently rising and falling. In Audrey’s performance, Princess Ann proves looks can, indeed, be deceiving.

One of my favorite scenes in Roman Holiday takes place toward the beginning of the story. During a ball, Princess Ann’s shoe is visible on the floor. The shoe was noticed by Countess Vereberg (portrayed by Margaret Rawlings) and General Provno (portrayed by Tullio Carminati). But the way these characters looked at each other and the shoe communicated the shock and embarrassment they were feeling. With the use of eye movements and facial expressions, this exchange was such a hilarious moment! Another performance I liked was Gregory Peck’s portrayal of Joe Bradley! A newspaper reporter from the United States, Joe had a consistent confidence that made him sure of himself. His reactions appeared believable; from a surprised look at seeing Princess Ann’s portrait in the paper to the joy on his face while dancing on a boat. Gregory used a variety of emotions throughout the film. This is one of the reasons Joe became a likable character!

The Italian setting: During the opening credits of Roman Holiday, it’s revealed the production was filmed in Rome, Italy. Through the cinematography and screenwriting, Princess Ann’s time in Italy served as an introduction to the film’s audience. Several iconic landmarks were featured; including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Mouth of Truth. There were even some lesser-known areas from The Eternal City included in the story. During Princess Ann’s day in Rome, she and Joe visit a wall of granted wishes. As explained through dialogue, if someone’s wish came true, they must place a commemorative plaque on the wall. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any confirmation this wall actually exists. But if it is real, I loved this tradition!

Avoiding the “it’s not what you think” cliché: In Roman Holiday, Joe Bradley makes a bet with his boss to conduct an interview with Princess Ann, including photos to prove the interview took place. This, along with Joe keeping his identity a secret, provided the perfect excuse to include the “it’s not what you think” cliché. However, the film’s creative team didn’t utilize this predictable piece of story-telling. Instead, Joe changes his mind about the bet, which gave him some character development. Even Joe’s friend, Irving Radovich, reconsiders submitting his photographs of Princess Ann’s adventure. After watching my fair share of rom-coms where the same tropes and clichés are incorporated, I appreciate Roman Holiday thinking outside the box!

What I didn’t like about the film:

A drawn-out story: Roman Holiday has a run-time of one hour and fifty-eight minutes. While watching the movie, that run-time was felt. The story of Princess Ann running away to go on an adventure was drawn-out. One reason is how some moments are longer than necessary. A perfect example is when Princess Ann meets a group of reporters. Each introduction was a slow procession that seemed to last about a minute and a half. Another example is when Princess Ann’s governess reads an itinerary. She slowly reads each event listed on Princess Ann’s schedule, making that part of that scene feel like almost a minute had crawled. To avoid this flaw, the script needed to be tighter.

Little sense of urgency: As I already brought up in this review, Princess Ann runs away to go on an adventure. While Princess Ann was having the time of her life, those in her life were frantically trying to find her. But very few scenes stressed this point. In fact, only three scenes addressed the urgency of bringing Princess Ann home. By providing the story with little sense of urgency, the seriousness of Princess Ann going missing was downplayed. Though I recognize how Roman Holiday is primarily Princess Ann’s story, her actions having consequences were mostly ignored.

Almost no one recognizing Princess Ann: The reason Princess Ann spends time in Italy is because the country was included in her “goodwill tour”. Shortly after running away, Princess Ann’s portrait is printed in every Italian newspaper, according to Joe Bradley’s boss. However, throughout Princess Ann’s adventure, only two people recognize her; Joe and his friend, Irving Radovich. Even before Princess Ann receives a hair-cut, no one acknowledges her true identity. I know fictional stories like Roman Holiday require a suspension of disbelief. But I couldn’t take that part of the movie seriously.

My overall impression:

Before reviewing Roman Holiday, I had heard so many good things about the movie. As I said in the introduction, the film is considered a “classic”. This is definitely not a bad picture. But I wanted to like it more than I did. Roman Holiday’s run-time feels as long as it is. At almost two hours, the story is drawn-out, partly due to moments that last longer than necessary. Having little sense of urgency not only downplays the seriousness of Princess Ann running away, it also mostly ignored Princess Ann’s actions having consequences. However, I believe the 1953 production has merit. The acting was one of the strongest aspects of this movie. Like I said in my review, I can understand why Audrey was, at least, nominated for an Academy Award! I actually think Roman Holiday should have been included in American Film Institute’s 100 Movies list. According to IMDB, it was “the first American film to be made in its entirety in Italy”. While I’m thankful for the chance to have finally seen Roman Holiday, I prefer Audrey’s pictures like The Nun’s Story and Funny Face. For Gregory Peck, I still believe To Kill a Mockingbird is the stronger movie.

Overall score: 6.1 out of 10

Take 3: Christmas on Division Street Review

Have you ever been in a situation where instead of finding a movie, a movie found you? This is my case with the 1991 made-for-tv film, Christmas on Division Street. Earlier this year, I conducted research for my Sally Solves a Mystery article about who Bianca Marquez Walsh from As the World Turns is. During this process, a commercial for the movie crossed my path. As a movie blogger who reviews their fair share of television films, especially those that are Christmas themed, I’m always looking for potential movies to cover. So, I remembered the 1991 program in the hopes of reviewing it someday. Fast forward to mid-November, 2024. When I learned what Taking Up Room’s On the Spot Blogathon was about, I knew I had found the perfect movie to write about for the event! Plus, the blogathon took place in December, which gave me another reason to review Christmas on Division Street! Before 2024, I had never heard of the 1991 tv production. But I was familiar with the film’s lead actors. I had seen some of the projects from Fred Savage’s filmography; like The Princess Bride and The Wonder Years. Three years ago, I reviewed one of Hume Cronyn’s movies; the 1987 Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation, Foxfire. In the aforementioned commercial for Christmas on Division Street, I discovered the story was more unique from other Christmas productions I’ve covered on my blog. This is because the friendship between the main characters was prioritized.

Things I liked about the film:

The acting: When you have a movie like Christmas on Division Street, where the story revolves around the friendship between two characters, it’s important to cast actors who can equally carry that production. Because of the strength of Fred’s and Hume’s performance, I was captivated by the story of Trevor and Cleveland! Hume’s character, Cleveland Meriwether, typically carries himself as a jolly mentor. He not only wanted to teach Trevor valuable lessons, he also wanted to help other people in need. However, there were moments that showed just how versatile of an actor Hume Cronyn is. After receiving a tin of cookies from Trevor, Cleveland heartily laughs to himself, remembering his friend’s kindness. Then, all of a sudden, Cleveland’s laughter morphs into sobbing, sadness now residing on his face. This transformation was seamless, showing Cleveland’s emotions bubbling over behind closed doors. The scene I described also presents Hume’s understanding for when and where to use emotionality.

Like I previously mentioned in this review, I was captivated by the story of Trevor and Cleveland because of the strength of Fred’s and Hume’s performance. One scene that illustrates this point is when Cleveland tries to help Trevor with an upcoming school assignment. After Cleveland reminds Trevor how they should be honest with each other, Trevor immediately becomes frustrated because he believes Cleveland has been dishonest with him. As he’s confronting Cleveland, Trevor’s tone of voice is sharp and his eyes narrow on Cleveland’s face. But as soon as Trevor calls Cleveland a “bum”, Trevor’s face quickly falls, realizing he’d messed up. Meanwhile, Cleveland looks deflated, as if his spirit had been crushed. Similar to Hume’s performance, Fred Savage knew how to use emotionality to his advantage. This knowledge allowed his portrayal of Trevor to be well-rounded!

Badja Djola portrayed Scorpio, a friend of Cleveland’s. Despite having limited appearances in Christmas on Division Street, he had such a commanding presence! One of my favorite scenes featuring Scorpio is when he’s sharing some of his backstory with Cleveland. With a combination of eye movements, vocal inflections, and even tilts of the head, Scorpio’s recollection was captivating. I clung on to every word, anticipating what he would say next. With everything I said, I wish Badja had received more screen time.

The messages and themes: As I mentioned in my review of Cancel Christmas, important messages and themes are sprinkled throughout the story of a typical Christmas film. While this was the case for Christmas on Division Street, the themes and messages within the story apply to the Christmas season as well as outside of Christmastime. A good example is when Trevor faces a dilemma; he doesn’t have any money for a ride home. With quick thinking, Cleveland tells Trevor he’s on his way to the bank. The next scene reveals Cleveland meant the blood bank, where he not only donates blood, he also makes enough money to help Trevor. This scene emphasizes how there are a variety of ways to help those in need any time of year. In another scene, Trevor tries to give Cleveland some used clothes. When he searches through the bag of clothes, Cleveland finds a long coat with a fur collar. Instead of taking the coat for himself, he gives the coat to a pregnant woman he knows. The theme of putting the needs of others before yourself is highlighted in this scene.

The inclusion of history: Toward the beginning of Christmas on Division Street, Trevor receives a class assignment to write a report about a topic relating to Philadelphia’s American Revolution history. Through this subplot, the movie’s creative team found an opportunity to incorporate history into the script. At the library, where Trevor and Cleveland first meet, Cleveland encourages Trevor to write about Benjamin Franklin. While Trevor takes notes, Cleveland shares how Benjamin Franklin created the first subscription library in Philadelphia. Cleveland also shares how Benjamin Franklin would sometimes write under the pen-name of Richard Saunders. Though these history lessons were brief, their inclusion in Christmas on Division Street was such a pleasant surprise!

The dialogue: I have said in the past how a made-for-TV movie’s dialogue can be very hit or miss. That’s because the quality of a television film’s dialogue depends on the skill and talent of the screenwriter. While watching Christmas on Division Street, I was impressed with this part of the production! The dialogue was not only clever, but also thoughtful. At the library one day, Cleveland meets with his social worker, Benedetti. After Benedetti expressed his frustrations over Cleveland’s lack of progress, Cleveland tells his social worker, “Weren’t for guys like me, you’d be out of a job. And before you know it, you’d be down here taking my place. I’d say I’m doing you a big favor”. Later in the movie, Cleveland gives the long coat with the fur collar to the pregnant woman he knows. Because Trevor was with Cleveland during this exchange, Cleveland says to Trevor, “Funny how people become invisible…when you keep your eyes closed”. Within these two examples, the screenwriter did a good job at providing Cleveland with character development through dialogue!

What I didn’t like about the film:

An inconsistent appearance of Christmas: With a movie titled Christmas on Division Street, you’d think the Christmas holiday would have such a consistent presence, it would seem like Christmas was its own character in the story. But that’s not what happened in the 1991 film. When I watched about thirty minutes of Christmas on Division Street, I wondered, “Isn’t this a Christmas film”? That’s because there was no acknowledgment of Christmas. The only noticeable seasonal element was fallen leaves occasionally shown in Philadelphia’s landscape. Christmas is finally recognized about forty minutes into an hour and thirty-three-minute movie. I recognize the emphasis in Christmas on Division Street is placed on the messages and themes of the holiday instead of the holiday itself. However, I still wish Christmas had a more consistent appearance in the film.

A quick resolution: Earlier in this review, I said, toward the beginning of Christmas on Division Street, Trevor receives a class assignment to write a report about a topic relating to Philadelphia’s American Revolution history. This subplot is interconnected with another subplot; Trevor’s conflict with a fellow student named Derek. For most of the story, Derek picks on Trevor. He even goes so far as to steal Trevor’s idea for his history report. But after their history reports have been graded, Trevor learns a little about Derek’s home life. This knowledge not only makes Trevor sympathetic toward Derek, he also becomes Derek’s friend. The subplot I just wrote about represents one of the story’s themes; that “everybody’s got their story”. However, the resolution to this conflict was, in my opinion, reached too quickly.

Tonal whiplash: After gathering research for his history report, Trevor rescues a pair of blue carnation flowers from the garbage with Cleveland. In this heartwarming scene, Trevor says how Cleveland sometimes reminds him of his grandpa, who had recently passed away. A scene later, a dead body is being placed in a coroner’s car, with Benedetti telling Trevor and Cleveland a man named Jake had died. The next scene shows Trevor and his family attending an event at their church. This tonal whiplash was not a consistent flaw in Christmas on Division Street. But among these aforementioned scenes, the transition between tones should have been smoother.

My overall impression:

In the introduction of this review, I stated how I did not find Christmas on Division Street, the movie found me. After seeing the film, I can honestly say I’m glad it crossed my path! Out of the made-for-TV Christmas projects I’ve seen, let alone reviewed, the 1991 production is one of better programs ever created. The acting from both the lead actors and the supporting cast is equally strong. While Fred and Hume carried the story through the strength of their acting abilities, Badja found a way to make his character memorable. The dialogue was clever and thoughtful thanks to the screenwriter, Barry Morrow. In fact, the dialogue was one of most impressive parts of the movie! I wish Christmas had a more consistent presence throughout Christmas on Division Street. However, I recognize the themes and messages of Christmas were prioritized over the holiday itself. I also wish the conflict between Trevor and Derek hadn’t been resolved so quickly. But I acknowledge how this subplot represented the theme of “everybody’s got their story”. If you’re looking for a Christmas movie that’s found off the beaten path or could be considered a “hidden gem”, let Christmas on Division Street find you on your path!
