Word on the Street: International Entertainment Center, Chuck E. Cheese, to Release Christmas Movie

Every Christmas season, viewers receive a smorgasbord of festive films. The most wonderful time of the year turns into a battle between television networks and streaming services to obtain the most viewership numbers and even increase revenue. Though one company has joined the competition in 2025. Earlier this month, the international entertainment center, Chuck E. Cheese, released a trailer for their new Christmas movie. Titled A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas, the film will premiere on Thanksgiving (November 27th). Viewers can watch the film either on Chuck E. Cheese’s official Youtube channel or Amazon Prime Video. According to the movie’s IMDB page, A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas is about the following:

“Chuck E. Cheese and his friends has plan a surprise Christmas party for Santa Claus, who is always exhausted from working on Christmas Eve. Their celebration also serves to save their town from a holiday-hating villain”.

I’ve said before on 18 Cinema Lane how I don’t receive many opportunities to cover animated films on my blog. Based on what I’ve been hearing about the animation side of the movie industry, it seems like there’s a lot of uncertainty. So, when I discovered the trailer for A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas, I was pleasantly surprised by this piece of movie news, especially since the project is presented in what looks like 2-D animation! It also seems like, within the past five years, Chuck E. Cheese (as a company) has made decisions to help maintain their relevancy. This summer, Chuck’s Arcade (a version of Chuck E. Cheese’s that only feature arcade games) opened in ten malls in the United States. While conducting research for this Word on the Street story, I discovered A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas is not the first time the company has created a movie, let alone a Christmas film. Chuck E. Cheese in the Galaxy 5000 is a straight-to-video presentation that was released in 1999. A decade prior, in 1983, The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t premiered as a television film back when the company was known as Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre.

What are your thoughts on this piece of movie news? Will you consider checking out A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas? Let me know in the comment section!

Word on the Street: Television show, ‘Community’ Will Soon Get Their “Six Seasons and a Movie”

Anyone familiar with the television show, Community, will know the phrase “six seasons and a movie”. Ever since Abed (one of the show’s main characters) uttered the phrase in the show’s second season, the idea of any show receiving a movie and six seasons has become “the American dream” in the world of entertainment. While Community has indeed earned six seasons, the movie has been in development since 2022. But according to the film’s official IMDB page, it appears the movie may be on its way! ‘Community: The Movie’ (the movie’s current working title) is classified as “pre-production”. However, the release date is listed as “Expected 2026”. The page lists the majority of the show’s main cast, implying they will return for the film. Production companies working on the project are Sony Pictures Television, Universal Studio Group, and Universal Television. Peacock will, as of this article’s publication, distribute ‘Community: The Movie’.

Community poster created by Krasnoff Foster Productions, Harmonious Claptrap, AGBO, Universal Media Studios (UMS), and Sony Pictures Television

This is the first time I’m talking about Community on 18 Cinema Lane. However, I wanted to cover this movie news story because the creative team behind the movie, as well as the show, is doing something that I appreciate; keeping a promise to the fans. Whether intentional or unintentional, “six seasons and a movie” became a promise, giving the fans something to hope for. So, when Community did get six seasons, it felt the show’s creative team stood by their word. Now, with the movie currently in development, the show’s creative team is, once again, staying by their word by giving the fans what they want. This makes me hope other television shows follow in Community’s footsteps.

What are your thoughts on this piece of movie news? Are you looking forward to ‘Community: The Movie’? Let me know in the comment section!

Have fun at the movies!

Word on the Street: Jobs are Cut at Hallmark and Lifetime in Pursuit of New Directions

Two weeks ago, I published a Word on the Street story about Michelle Vicary returning to Hallmark as the company’s head of programming. But this is not the only recent change happening at Hallmark. Lynette Rice, of Deadline, reports how the company “eliminated 30 jobs on Wednesday”. The desire “to “transition our workforce to meet the needs of the business today”” was the provided reason for the cut jobs. Jimmy Holcomb, who was Hallmark’s Vice President of Production, is one of the laid off employees. His role at the company was overseeing “the physical production of MOWs, series, and specials for Hallmark Media’s broadcast channels”. He is “credited for creating new ventures for Hallmark Media throughout the world” as well. Meanwhile, Peter White, also from Deadline, reports how Lifetime “cut the majority of its non-scripted team”. The article states the reason for the cut jobs is “Lifetime is focusing more on its television movie business”. Affected by this decision is Nicole Vogel, who was the network’s VP for Programming and Development. At the time of the article’s publication, “The only remaining member of the unscripted team is now Brie Miranda Bryant, SVP, Original Programming”.

When I wrote about Michelle Vicary coming back to Hallmark in my last Word on the Street story, I addressed the network’s declining viewership. At that time, two Hallmark Channel films, A Machu Picchu Proposal and Providence Falls: Chance of a Lifetime, attracted less than a million viewers. Five movies in a row have received under a million viewers at the publication of this Word on the Street story. These newer titles are Providence Falls: An Impossible Promise (592,000 viewers), Providence Falls: Thief Of Fate (592,000 viewers), and Mystery Island: Play for Keeps (350,000 viewers). Similar to what I said in my last Word on the Street story, I’m not surprised Hallmark is making decisions like cutting jobs, especially when no movie in 2025, so far, has seen two million viewers or more.

Though I haven’t seen many Lifetime movies this year, most of the ones I have seen have been decent. However, I am aware of Lifetime’s reputation for distributing a large quantity of films with poor quality. Almost every year, at least one Lifetime movie ends up on my end of the year worst movies list. In 2024, three movies were placed on that list; Revenge Best Served Chilled, My Life Is on the Line, and Boy in the Walls. With this recent prioritization of made-for-tv movies, I’m hoping emphasis is not only placed on quality over quantity, I’m also hoping production value is raised as well.

What are your thoughts on these pieces of movie news? What other changes do you think are in store for Lifetime and Hallmark? Tell me in the comment section!

Word on the Street: Michelle Vicary Receives New Role Upon Returning to Hallmark

Way back in 2021, I wrote a Word on the Street story about Michelle Vicary’s departure from Hallmark. At the time, she was the company’s executive for programming and production. Now, four years later, Michelle has returned with a new title. In a recent article from Variety, Emily Longeretta reports how Michelle will now become Hallmark’s “head of programming”, allowing her to “oversee all production and original programming across Hallmark’s content platforms”. Her new role comes at a time when Hallmark has been attempting to bring their assets under one umbrella as “One Hallmark”. Their goal is to “deliver incredible content, incredible products and incredible experiences that leverage the full breadth of the brand” by “tying all of those things together in really unique ways”. When reflecting on Michelle’s importance in the company, Darren Abbott, Hallmark’s Chief Brand Officer, stated, “She was really the missing piece of the puzzle, I think, around the way I’m thinking about the brand.”

In the 2020s, so far, Hallmark’s viewership has been gradually declining. As of the publication of this Word on the Street story, 2025 hasn’t seen any movie premiere achieve two million viewers or more. In fact, the latest film release, Providence Falls: Chance of a Lifetime only attracted 695,000 viewers. This is now the second movie in a row to garner less than a million viewers, as the previous premiere, A Machu Picchu Proposal, received 964,000 viewers. Based on everything I just said; I’m not surprised Michelle Vicary came back to Hallmark. She worked at Hallmark when the network was in its prime, so I’d like to think she knows how to bring the company back to success. Though only time will tell how Michelle’s leadership will impact Hallmark as well as its consumers.

What are your thoughts on this piece of movie news? Are you happy to see Michelle Vicary return to Hallmark? Tell me in the comment section!

Word on the Street: Updates on Three Upcoming Fall Movies for Hallmark Channel!

Back in June, a third movie in the Haul Out the Holly series was announced. According to an article from the blog, It’s a Wonderful Movie, the film is Halloween themed, as two “spooky new neighbors”, Luna and Marvin, move to the neighborhood of Evergreen Lane. At the time of the announcement, no release date had been revealed. However, the official IMDB page for the third chapter, titled Haul Out the Halloween, has the release date listed as October 15th, 2025. As of the publication of this Word on the Street story, Hallmark has not confirmed this date. If Haul Out the Halloween will indeed premiere on October 15th, this could indicate when Hallmark Channel’s ‘Countdown to Christmas’ line-up will begin. With October 15th falling on a Wednesday and with the first Christmas films of 2024 and 2023 premiering on October 18th and October 20th, I speculate 2025’s first ‘Countdown to Christmas’ film could premiere as early as October 17th.

On Hallmark Channel’s website, a new movie has received a September 27th release date. The film is titled Adventures in Love & Birding, with Andrew Walker and Rachel Boston co-leading. The movie is about the following:

“A single mom agrees to be the partner of a bird enthusiast for a birding competition but misunderstands the assignment and tells everyone she’s his new girlfriend instead of just his teammate.”

Because the phrase “misunderstands the assignment” is included in this synopsis, I wonder if Rachel Boston’s character is a teacher? Maybe she is teaching her students about birds, leading to her involvement in the competition?

Back in May, I wrote a Word on the Street story about two new films in the Mystery Island series; Mystery Island: Play for Keeps and Mystery Island: House Rules. At the time, the fourth movie, Mystery Island: House Rules, had not received a premiere date. But Hallmark Channel’s website has now chosen September 14th as the film’s date of release. The movie’s official synopsis is the same on both its IMDB page and its Hallmark Channel page. Plus, Hallmark Channel revealed a collection of promotional photos for Mystery Island: House Rules as well. This fourth installment comes a month after Mystery Island: Play for Keeps, which premieres August 17th.

Word on the Street: ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Returns to the Big Screen with Help from AI

Lately, I’ve been looking for a Word on the Street story to cover on 18 Cinema Lane, as I haven’t published any movie news related articles since May. So, when I watched a recent video from the Youtube channel, Film Threat, about an upcoming movie screening, I just had to write about the story on my blog! Starting on August 28th, The Sphere in Las Vegas will host an immersive screening of The Wizard of Oz. The 86-year-old film will be elevated through practical effects, such as giant fans and fog elements. Glenn Derry, an “Oscar-winning technical wizard”, is working on the Sphere’s screening of The Wizard of Oz. He justifies using these practical effects by stating, “We are here to ensure that everybody gets a great experience of feeling like they’re in the Wizard of Oz. And that includes sight, touch, sound, and smell”. AI (artificial intelligence) will also be utilized to compliment the Sphere’s wraparound screen. Scenes are expanded using a technological process referred to as “outpainting”, allowing the audience to see more of a scene’s background. This screening of The Wizard of Oz features Uncle Henry in a scene where he was originally off-screen, extending Charley Grapewin’s role.

As Film Threat’s Chris Gore and Alan Ng reacted to this piece of movie news, they developed mixed feelings about the screening. Chris even speculates the “future of cinema” being spectacle based is due to “fewer and fewer people are going to the movies”. I can only speak for myself, but I am torn over this screening of The Wizard of Oz. The idea of an immersive movie screening is fascinating. If this idea is going to be executed, The Wizard of Oz is the perfect film to choose, as there are so many moving parts to the story itself. But the added content to the Sphere’s screening of the movie raises some concern. I find the subject of restoring and preserving “lost media” interesting. However, the inclusion of AI creates a fine line between restoring “lost media” and rewriting cinematic history. This fine line needs to be discussed by both film and “lost media” enthusiasts.

What are your thoughts on this piece of movie news? Which movie do you think should receive an immersive screening? Please tell me in the comment section!

Word on the Street: Hallmark Mystery’s ‘Mystery Island’ Series Receives Two More Chapters

In the 2020s, mystery series have become less common on Hallmark Mystery. Murder, She Baked/Hannah Swensen, Curious Caterer, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered are, currently, the only mystery series with three or more movies. But Hallmark looks to be changing that by adding two more films to the series known as Mystery Island. According to IMDB (Internet Movie Data Base), Mystery Island: Play for Keeps and Mystery Island: House Rules have been given official pages. On the page for Mystery Island: Play for Keeps, June 5th is the scheduled release date. The official page for Mystery Island: House Rules simply states the film is “completed”. The synopsis for both movies is the following:

Mystery Island: Play for Keeps: “Mystery Island hosts a corporate retreat with a guest being Emilia’s ex-fiancé. Old feelings become complicated, tensions run high, and allegations arise when a guest is found dead.”

Mystery Island: House Rules: Mystery Island success raises plans of expansion, and the Island team meets their Mystery Mountain counterparts for a friendly murder game, but the fun ends with a murder in plain sight”.

Just in 2025 alone, some of Hallmark’s creative choices have been questionable. Their decision to create two more films in the Mystery Island series is one of them. If you look at the IMDB page for Mystery Island, you’ll see most of the reviews are negative. The sequel, Mystery Island: Winner Takes All, received fewer reviews on IMDB. This indicates less viewers watched the second movie. However, all of these reviews are negative. With that said, it makes me wonder why Hallmark would give so much time, energy, and resources to a series that has gotten decreasing viewership numbers and consistently poor reviews?

Word on the Street: New ‘Hannah Swensen Mystery’ Movie on the Way!

When I talked about One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery in my list of the top ten worst movies I saw in 2024, I said I hope Delores receives better story ideas if there are more Hannah Swensen films in the works. Days after that list was published, Hallmark revealed another movie in the Hannah Swensen series! On Hallmark Mystery’s website, an official page has been created for Reality Bites: A Hannah Swensen Mystery. The film will premiere on February 6th and the story is about the following:

“Hannah’s favorite reality show takes over The Cookie Jar. When the producer is found dead, Hannah and Norman team up to track down the killer. Chad invites Hannah to court”.

According to the film’s official page, Alison Sweeney, Victor Webster, and Barbara Niven will return to reprise their roles. Even though Norman was mentioned in the synopsis, it’s unknown, at this time, if Gabriel Hogan will also return to reprise his role.

Image found at freepik.com.

There are some noticeable observations coming from the official page of Reality Bites: A Hannah Swensen Mystery. Looking at the release dates for this movie and The Jane Mysteries: A Deadly Prescription, Hallmark’s new mystery titles will premiere on Thursdays instead of Fridays like last year. Norman’s involvement was limited in One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery, not only when it came to solving the case, but also within the overall story. The synopsis of Reality Bites: A Hannah Swensen Mystery states, “Hannah and Norman team up to track down the killer”. This statement assumes Norman will play a larger role in the 2025 movie. Ever since Chad was written into this series, he and Hannah don’t work together as consistently as Hannah and Mike did. However, Chad still finds a way to have a presence in Hannah’s life. A perfect example is brought up in Reality Bites: A Hannah Swensen Mystery’s synopsis, which states “Chad invites Hannah to court”. Everything I just said makes me wonder if the creative team of the Hannah Swensen series wants to create a love triangle between Norman, Hannah, and Chad?

Word on the Street: Movie Adaptation for Susanna Clarke’s ‘Piranesi’ on the Horizon

Whenever I review a movie that’s based on a book or pre-existing piece of literature, I usually find myself stating how the film is based on a book I haven’t read. This has led me to create the “Based on a Book I Haven’t Read Yet” award for my annual Gold Sally Awards. But for this piece of movie news, an upcoming adaptation is based on a book I’ve actually read! Reported two months ago by Bill Desowitz from IndieWire, Susanna Clarke’s novel, Piranesi, will be brought to life by animation studio, Laika. Travis Knight, the CEO and president of Laika, will direct the movie. Though not much else is known about the Piranesi adaptation, Susanna herself gave her approval, stating, “I’ve been inspired by so many animated movies; and Laika has produced such extraordinary work – movies like ‘Coraline’ and ‘Kubo and the Two Strings,’ full of beauty and wonder and weirdness. I’m thrilled that ‘Piranesi’ has found a home with them and I can’t wait to see what they do.” Meanwhile, Travis expressed his enthusiasm over the project, saying how Susanna is “one of my all-time favorite authors” and how “I can scarcely imagine a more joyful experience than wandering through the worlds Susanna dreamed into being”.

Piranesi book cover image found on Goodreads

Like I said earlier in this article, I have read Piranesi. In fact, I read this book recently as one of my selections for this year’s Eurovisionathon readathon. When I first discovered the news about Piranesi’s adaptation, I wondered how this story would translate to the screen. This is because the story is written in a logical way, encouraging the reader to actively pay attention to what they’re reading. My interest piqued upon learning Laika would be creating the adaptation! I reviewed Kubo and the Two Strings back in 2019. The film was not only one of the top three best movies I saw that year, it was the first time an animated picture had earned a spot on my year-end best of list! The fact the same director and studio behind Kubo and the Two Strings will be working on the Piranesi adaptation makes me excited! It gives me a chance to check out more of Laika’s work, as well as showcases the creativity of a studio that, in my opinion, is underrated.

What are your thoughts on this piece of movie news? Are you looking forward to seeing Piranesi adapted as a movie? Let me know in the comment section!

Word on the Street: Hallmark Releases Trailer for ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters’

I recently published an editorial speculating why I believed Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters could be a Christmas movie. This speculation was not only based on the film’s premiere date, but on other factors like only one Christmas movie throughout the Signed, Sealed, Delivered series and how I thought the title could allude to the Nativity story or A Christmas Carol. At the time I published my editorial, Hallmark hadn’t released any promotional material for their upcoming production. During the premiere of Tipline Mysteries: Dial 1 for Murder, the trailer for Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters aired on Hallmark Mystery. I wanted to write this Word on the Street article to own up to my error and dispel confusion for my readers, as the trailer proves the new Signed, Sealed, Delivered film is not a Christmas movie. I also wanted to write about this trailer because, after all, it is movie news.

The trailer for Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters has been shown on Hallmark Mystery and is available on Hallmark Mystery’s website. However, as of the publication of this Word on the Street story, the trailer is not featured on the movie’s official page on Hallmark Mystery’s website. This screenshot, taken by me, Sally Silverscreen, is proof the trailer exists.

I have always been honest about my thoughts on the Signed, Sealed, Delivered series. In my opinion, the overall quality of this series has been inconsistent. Based on the trailer alone, Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters appears underwhelming. One reason is a story that seems recycled and predictable. As a Heartie, I’m over redemption stories because of how long Henry Gowen’s redemption arc was drawn out on When Calls the Heart. With the trailer’s voice-over stating “with a teacher trying to rewrite her wrong” and with the aforementioned teacher admitting sending a letter “in a very weak moment”, it looks like two out of the three titular letters will likely serve a redemption story.

At the beginning of the trailer, Oliver brings up “the great mailbox breach of 2017”. The way this event is addressed in the trailer gives me the impression the POstables (Oliver, Shane, Rita, and Norman) have been working on this case for a long period of time. Signed, Sealed, Delivered is a series where the stories are given a contemporary setting. From 2017 to 2021, five Signed, Sealed, Delivered movies have been released. If the movies take place within the years of their release, how come this “great mailbox breach of 2017” is just now being brought up? I hope a logical explanation is provided in Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters.

In my editorial about why Francesca Quinn: PI is the worst Hallmark movie I’ve ever seen, I talked about the importance of fictional detectives having “quirks”, something about that character that sets them apart from other fictional detectives. The POstables serve as a good example of characters possessing “quirks” and being unique from one another, like Rita being obsessed with owls or Norman having a memory that rivals an encyclopedia. Based on the trailer’s voice-over stating “and a delivery that hits closer to home” and Oliver telling Charley “we are here on official business”, I wonder if Charley will become a fifth member of the POstables? Charley was introduced in the last Signed, Sealed, Delivered chapter; Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Vows We Have Made. Looking back on that film, the only aspect I remember about Charley was how she was pregnant. The lack of strong characterazation for Charley is one reason why I didn’t like the previous Signed, Sealed, Delivered film. So, if she does become a fifth member of the POstables, I wonder what “quirk” Charley will adopt?

The trailer for Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters has been shown on Hallmark Mystery and is available on Hallmark Mystery’s website. However, as of the publication of this Word on the Street story, the trailer is not featured on the movie’s official page on Hallmark Mystery’s website. This screenshot, taken by me, Sally Silverscreen, is proof the trailer exists.

When I speculated Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters being a Christmas movie, I wondered if the next movie, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered: To the Moon and Back” could serve a two-part story. This speculation was based on the belief of Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters retelling A Christmas Carol and the rock star in “Signed, Sealed, Delivered: To the Moon and Back” as a Marley-like character. As the title suggests, three letters will be key elements in the film’s plot. But the trailer for Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters shows only two letters; one from the teacher and one for someone named “Maria”. The synopsis for “Signed, Sealed, Delivered: To the Moon and Back” states how the POstables go “on a road trip” in an effort to “find the recipient of a lost letter”. This indicates only one letter serving as the story’s mystery. Maybe that letter is the titular third letter in Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters, making that film and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered: To the Moon and Back” a two part story?
