Sunset Over Hope Valley: Finding the Right Solution

In this episode of When Calls the Heart, Lucas told Elizabeth “a good solution is a deal that everyone wants to take”. After he said this, I took note of how several characters in this episode were searching for the right solution to their dilemmas. From the Coulters looking for the perfect name for their daughter to some of Hope Valley’s children trying to come up with a compromise for the hot springs, there are always conflicts that need to be resolved. Conflicts make a story interesting. But the solutions that are discovered can also add intrigue to the story. In the end, the resolutions made in Hope Valley have, more often than not, benefitted all parties involved. This allows Hope Valley’s residents to keep the peace. Now, let’s re-cap this episode of When Calls the Heart!

Episode: 6

Name: The Heart of the Problem

Major stories:

Rosemary and Lee are still trying to find the perfect name for their daughter. They try giving her several nicknames, but none of them are a good match. While shopping with her daughter at the Mercantile, Rosemary discovers a music box. When she hears the box’s tune, Rosemary recollects on a memory from her past. Later that day, at a check-up appointment, Rosemary confides in Faith how the birth of her daughter has caused her to reminisce about her mother, who not only left her family when she was five, but also passed away when she was eighteen. Faith states to Rosemary how she is grieving her mother’s loss. After the appointment, Rosemary talks about her mother with Elizabeth. Lee even tries to cheer his wife up. In his attempt, Lee learns that Joseph has kept Rosemary’s chest, the same chest Rosemary wanted to get rid of in this season’s third episode. When Rosemary and Lee look through the chest, they discover the contents belonged to Rosemary’s mother. Through a conversation with Elizabeth, Rosemary shares her parents separated when she was younger, which explains why her mother left the family. She also states how she now feels closer to her mother. At the end of the episode, Rosemary and Lee decide to name their daughter Marigold Elizabeth Coulter, calling her “Goldy” for short, in honor of Rosemary’s mother.

Toby, Cooper, Ally, and Angela look forward to visiting the hot springs before and after school. Due to the tourists arriving in Hope Valley for the hot springs, the children are frustrated by the tourists’ inability to share. Elizabeth and Lucas encourage the students to come up with a compromise, with Elizabeth using this experience to create a lesson for her class. While brainstorming a solution, Lucas offers Angela, Ally, Cooper, and Toby some useful advice; figuring out what the tourists want before sharing what they want. Taking this advice, the children try to create a schedule for the hot springs. This plan doesn’t work, as the tourists don’t want to give up their time at the springs. However, the children discover the reason why the tourists go to the springs; they feel visiting the springs is the only way to spend their time in Hope Valley. At the community barbeque, Lucas organizes some games for all the attendants, such as corn-hole and tug-of-war. The success of these games opens the door for other activities for the tourists, like an exercise class. A new schedule has been set up for the hot springs as well, which makes everyone happy.

Minor stories:

While working at the Mercantile, the young bandit, who Nathan refers to as “Harry”, shares with Nathan the troubles at his hometown, Eagle Creek. Due to a drought that took place a year ago, a company called Union City Holdings has attempted to purchase farm land. Someone from the company even tried to purchase Harry’s family’s land, which they refused to sell. Because of the poor land, families have left Eagle Creek. Even the town’s pastor left. During one of Harry and Nathan’s conversations, Madeleine seems to be eavesdropping on what they are saying. She looks worried when Union City Holdings is brought up.

Bill gives Madeleine the official papers for his land. During this exchange, Bill invites Madeleine to Hope Valley’s community barbeque, with Madeleine accepting Bill’s invitation. However, she is reconsidering her decision to stay in Hope Valley. Madeleine shares her thoughts with her son, Jamie. Jamie doesn’t want to leave Hope Valley, as he doesn’t feel lonely in the town. At the barbeque, Madeleine sees how much fun her son is having while playing a game of football, a clear sign of what decision Madeleine should make. Meanwhile, Bill still has his suspicions about Madeleine. He shares these thoughts with Nathan one evening.

Because of how successful business has been at the café, Minnie suggests hosting another community dinner. This time, Joseph and Minnie agree to prepare barbeque, St. Louis and Kansas City style. Leading up to the barbeque, some of Hope Valley’s residents try each style of barbeque. It seems like more people like the Kansas City barbeque the best. But the Canfields put each barbeque to the test, allowing residents to vote for their favorite barbeque. At the community barbeque, Minnie and Joseph discover the vote is tied. Upon hearing this news, Bill confessed how he mixed the barbeque sauces, claiming to like this new sauce.

Some thoughts to consider:

  • As I mentioned in this re-cap, the Canfields create both St. Louis and Kansas City style barbeque. When Joseph said he was from Kansas City, I understood why that detail was brought up on When Calls the Heart. Not only does Kansas City and St. Louis have a real-life rivalry, Kansas City is also the location of Hallmark’s headquarters. This was a clever way of incorporating a Hallmark related “Easter egg” on the show!
  • While watching this episode of When Calls the Heart, I realized how much Harry’s story is reminiscent of Jesse’s story from season three. In the commercial for the next episode, it was revealed Elizabeth’s former student, Rosaleen, is returning to Hope Valley. Because Rosaleen and Harry appear to be around the same age, I wonder if these characters will pursue a romantic relationship? The show doesn’t have a younger couple included in the story. Christopher and Rachel have been the only younger couple in recent seasons, but they only appeared in one season.
  • Prior to the community barbeque, Joseph invites Henry to the event. During this conversation, the plant boxes that were built in the previous episode are shown on screen. I really like how these boxes turned out! The biggest box has sunflowers painted on the side. The smaller boxes double as benches, creating a spot for residents and visitors to admire the plants. When Calls the Heart’s prop department definitely deserve credit for these plant boxes!

Sunset Over Hope Valley: Taking Time for Yourself

As I said in this season’s first episode re-cap, I’m always inspired by things said by the characters, an episode’s theme, or an observation I’ve made while watching the show. In this episode of When Calls the Heart, I discovered the overarching theme was the idea of taking time for yourself. It’s surprising how long it took the show’s creative team to incorporate this theme into one of their episodes. However, it’s for the best this theme was featured at all in this particular story. Hope Valley’s residents show viewers there are many ways you can take time for yourself. From simply knowing when to say “no” to stepping away from a daily routine for a little while, the emphasis is to look out for your needs and well-being. In a town where each character has so much to give, it’s important to give yourself a gift every so often. Now, let’s start this re-cap of When Calls the Heart!

Name: Life is But a Dream

Major stories:

It’s been three weeks since the birth of Lee and Rosemary’s daughter. While adjusting to their new life as parents, they still haven’t come up with a first name for their baby girl. Rosemary and Lee’s friends have been very gracious toward them, delivering food and offering to help in any way they can. Lucas and Elizabeth even encourage the Coulters to go on a date to the saloon, agreeing to babysit baby Coulter. Rosemary appreciates the offer, but insists Elizabeth and Lucas go on a date instead, volunteering to watch Jack Jr. Both the date and the babysitting are a success! Wanting to return the favor, Elizabeth not only does Rosemary and Lee’s laundry, she also babysits their daughter. This is a pleasant surprise for the Coulters, as they were taking a nap while Elizabeth was helping out. Later that day, Elizabeth invites Rosemary for tea. The tea ends up becoming a dinner for both Rosemary and Lee, with Lucas and Elizabeth as their hosts.

Lucas is planning a big surprise for Elizabeth. The surprise in question is a brand-new house. When Lucas shares his plan with Mike and Bill, they don’t think Elizabeth will accept the offer. But Lucas still wants to ask Elizabeth anyways. During their date at the saloon, Lucas shows Elizabeth a picture Jack Jr. drew of a purple castle. That picture segues into Lucas’ surprise for Elizabeth. Lucas encourages Elizabeth to take some time to think things over, which Elizabeth agrees to do. But later in the episode, Elizabeth tells Lucas she’d rather stay in the home she and her son are currently living in. Her main reason is she doesn’t want to leave the community behind, appreciating how the Coulters live right next door. With that reasoning, Lucas agrees not to build a new house for Elizabeth.

Minor stories:

Madeleine is still trying to persuade Bill to sell her the town’s land from the previous episode. Bill is still putting his foot down, standing by the fact that land is owned by the town. Though Madeleine is determined to purchase Hope Valley land, she now has a deadline for when she can make a purchase. At the Mercantile, Madeleine receives a phone call from an unknown caller. She tells this caller she needs a little more time, her face telling the viewer she wasn’t given more time. When Madeleine tells Bill she wants a piece of land with a stream, she explains Jamie and his father used to fly-fish. Having a stream on the property would bring back some happier memories. Toward the end of the episode, Madeleine and Jamie plan on leaving Hope Valley, as she couldn’t find a piece of land she liked. Bill offers his land to Madeleine, with Madeleine agreeing to purchase it. Bill tells her he’ll make the sale official with his lawyer in Union City.

Henry has begun to take up woodworking. One day, Elizabeth shares with Henry how her class needs plant boxes to plant their vegetables. Even though Henry agrees to build these boxes, Elizabeth confesses her students will build the boxes alongside Henry. The next day, Elizabeth’s students are eager to learn about woodworking. Henry instructs them how to properly use a hammer, with the students quickly absorbing the lesson. The students also begin planting their vegetables. But because these activities took most of the day, Elizabeth tells her students they’ll have to finish their project another day. But the students want to continue their project, all of them agreeing to meet on a Saturday to finish planting their vegetables. That Saturday, Elizabeth, her students, and Henry work to plant the vegetables. One of Elizabeth’s students, Sarah, is concerned about her pumpkin being lonely. Henry reassures her that pumpkins grow best when they’re together. With that, he and Sarah create a special spot in one of the plant boxes for Sarah’s pumpkin to grow.

One day, after school, Nathan tells Elizabeth he and Ally are going camping. Ally asks Nathan if Angela can join their trip, with Nathan agreeing. But Nathan tells Angela she’ll have to get her parents’ permission first. At the café, Angela asks her parents if she can go on the camping trip. Though they have their understandable concerns, Joseph and Minnie give Angela permission, as long as she finishes her homework before the trip and respects Nathan’s rules. At the last minute, though, Joseph joins Nathan, Ally, and Angela on the camping trip. Nathan and Joseph appreciate the time given to spend with their daughters. Meanwhile, Angela and Ally agree to step out of their comfort zones. Angela agrees to sing a song while playing the ukelele, which she performs “This Little Light of Mine” around the campfire. Ally agrees to submit a poem to the upcoming Union City poetry contest. After returning to Hope Valley, Nathan tells Elizabeth about the camping trip. He tells her the experience was beneficial for everyone involved.

Mei, Fiona, and Faith are trying out different mud mask formulas, using Mei’s grandmother’s journal as a guide. When a potential customer comes into the barber shop, she is curious about the mud mask. She asks who created the formula, with Mei taking credit for her grandmother’s ideas. At the café, Fiona asks Mei why she wasn’t honest about the mud mask formulas. Mei confesses how she feels connected to her culture when she reads her grandmother’s journal. However, she doesn’t think tourists would be as understanding. Fiona is supportive of her friend, telling Mei how she should never apologize for who she is. Later, at the ice cream parlor, Mei, Faith, and Fiona agree to sell the mud masks and name their product after Mei’s grandmother.

Some thoughts to consider:

  • In my previous re-cap, I stated how I recognized the show’s creative team trying to keep the “Hearties” invested in the story. While I still acknowledge this recognition, I think it’s kind of ridiculous how we still don’t know the first name of Rosemary and Lee’s daughter. They had nine months and three weeks to come up with a name, yet they are still empty-handed. I really hope the baby will finally receive a first name in the next episode, especially since it seems like Rosemary might name her daughter after her mother.
  • Looking back on the later seasons of When Calls the Heart, Henry’s socialization hasn’t been strong. Sure, he has interacted with the other characters. But these interactions have been brief. Henry’s socialization improved when he reconnected with his son, Christopher. However, that storyline only lasted one season. With all this said, I think it was smart on Elizabeth’s part to have Henry working with her students on their plant box project. Working with others to reach a shared goal is what Henry needs, an opportunity to open up to others and step out of his shell. This is a great step in the right direction for Henry and his story!
  • Last season, I found Mei’s story to be the most disappointing one, as her story was drawn out for so long. Because of how drawn out her story was, I feel like I, as a viewer, didn’t truly get to know Mei as a character. Therefore, I appreciated seeing Mei receive more character development in this episode! Mei’s desire to connect with her culture, as well as her grandmother, added more depth to Mei’s story. With Mei starting a business with her friends, that will help her story expand in the long run. I hope the viewers get to learn more about Mei as the season continues!

Sunset Over Hope Valley: You Are Safe

Hope Valley is one of the safest towns in television history. Yes, there was the tragedy at the mines. However, that event took place prior to the events on the show. Even when Jack Thornton died, his death happened off-screen, away from Hope Valley. In the town itself, none of the characters are ever in danger. While there have been fires, bandits, and suspicious characters, these conflicts have been resolved with little to no damage or trauma. More often than not, the show chronicles Hope Valley’s residents simply going about their day. Hallmark’s little Canadian town has become a place where families have chosen to raise their children. The safety of Hope Valley seems to play a contributing factor. With the arrival of Rosemary and Lee’s child, a gift is in store: the gift of a safe and peaceful upbringing. Name: Great Expectations

Major story:

Lee and Rosemary’s baby is a week overdue. Even though the Coulters are worried, Faith reassures them of a complication-free pregnancy. While walking through Hope Valley, Rosemary finally goes into labor. The Coulters’ friends rally around them to help them get home as quickly and safely as possible. At the Coulters’ house, Rosemary is in active labor. But the experience is causing the mother-to-be to feel stressed, making her blood pressure rise. Fearing for Rosemary and the baby, Elizabeth gets Lee, who is staying at her house until the baby’s arrival. Many hours later, Lee and Rosemary welcome a baby girl. When Elizabeth meets the baby, she learns she is not only the girl’s Godmother, the girl’s middle name is ‘Elizabeth’. The Coulters’ have not chosen a first name for their daughter yet.

Minor stories:

A mysterious young man has come to Hope Valley. Whenever Bill or Nathan is present, the young man tries to stay out of their way. But in doing so, he trips on the steps of the mercantile. As Faith notices the young man’s hand is injured, Scout starts barking at him. This causes Nathan to become suspicious of the young man. At the infirmary, Faith discovers she ran out of gauze to dress the young man’s injury. So, she fetches more gauze, leaving the young man alone in the infirmary. Instead of staying put, the young man tries to run away. He is stopped by Nathan, who discovers the young man has stolen two cans of lard from the mercantile. After the young man is arrested and placed in jail, Nathan and Faith learn the young man is the bandit they encountered in this season’s second episode. They also learn his family has a farm that recently experienced a bad crop. Though Nathan is still suspicious of the young man, he makes the young man apologize to Florence and Ned. The Yosts make the young man work in the mercantile in order to pay for the cans he stole.

Henry is trying to make sense of everything that has recently happened to him. He even confesses to Joseph how he feels tired. Joseph is able to read between the lines and sense how troubled Henry is. During a conversation with Bill, Joseph confesses how guilty Henry still seems, telling Bill how Henry probably still thinks about all the lives the mines took. In an effort to help Henry, Joseph and Bill come up with a lie; that the judge changed his mind about dropping the charges. They tell Henry the judge is requiring him to do community service. Henry says he can tell they are lying, but agrees to Bill and Joseph’s plan.

Madeleine is planning to tour Hope Valley. She recruits Mike to show her around town. On the tour, they drive through a field with a lake. Madeleine immediately adores this piece of land and would like to buy it. Mike tries to burst her bubble by confessing how the land is owned by the town, meaning it’s not for sale. Unshaken by this news, Madeleine goes to Bill and asks him about the land. Bill tells Madeleine the same thing Mike told her. But she is still determined to persuade Bill.

Some thoughts to consider:

  • I’m torn about this episode; on the one hand, I recognize the show’s creative team is trying to keep the “Hearties” invested in the story. Hence the reason why Rosemary and Lee’s daughter’s first name was not revealed in this episode. But on the other hand, there are parts of the story that could have been given. While touring Hope Valley, Madeleine could have revealed a little bit of her backstory. This is the tenth season’s fourth episode and the viewers still know barely any information about her. Besides the birth of Lee and Rosemary’s daughter, this was a borderline “filler” episode.
  • In this episode, I was not expecting Jack Thornton to be brought up as many times as he was, especially by his son. It does make me wonder if When Calls the Heart’s creative team might try to bring Jack back, with his absence excused by memory loss or him being in a coma. Jack’s return would be a very surprising plot twist, as well as a memorable way to end season ten. But since we’re not halfway through the season yet, only time will tell.
  • I am so curious about the young bandit! His arrival brings up so many questions, such as
  • What is his name?
  • Why does Scout become attached to the bandit once he’s in jail?
  • Is he telling the truth about his backstory?
  • Does he work with a group of bandits or does he work by himself?

I haven’t asked this many questions about a character since Tom Thornton showed up back in season two. I’m glad the young bandit is staying in town for a while, so “Hearties” can learn more about him!

Evenings At The Shore: Hope At the Bottom of the Box

When Evan talks about his family in this episode of Chesapeake Shores, Mandrake tells him how hope was found at the bottom of Pandora’s Box. The fact Mandrake would say something so profound is not surprising. But what he said was interesting. Pandora’s Box is, more often than not, associated with negativity. I remember hearing a saying about not being able to close Pandora’s Box once it’s opened. When you take “Pandora’s Box” out of the equation, though, you remember how there are such things as good boxes. Presents are a perfect example, as you anticipate what might be inside them. Sometimes, a person is gifted what they need instead of what they want. This is the case for Evan, as Mandrake likely knew hope is what Evan needed.

Episode: 8

Name: I Get a Kick Out of You

Abby and Evan’s story: Evan finally receives his DNA results. Not only does he learn about several of his quirks, he also learns he has cousins in Florida. For the majority of the episode, though, Evan avoids exploring this part of his family’s history. He even takes up magic again, a hobby he had when he was a child. While performing a card trick for Caitlyn and Carrie, Abby talks to Mandrake about Evan’s hesitance. Mandrake explains how Evan has been on his own for so long, he’s afraid of letting others get close to him. Later in the episode, Evan confesses to Abby he’s wanted to know more about his father since he was a teenager. He then tells Mandrake to visit his cousins in Florida. Several days later, Mandrake returns to the O’Brien family home with Evan’s father in tow.

Bree and Luke’s story: Kevin and Sarah’s baby shower is just around the corner. This makes Bree realize she still doesn’t have a gift to give them. Meanwhile, Miranda Livingston arrives in Chesapeake Shores to discuss the movie deal of Bree’s book. Because Bree has never met Miranda before, she doesn’t know what to expect. Miranda’s down-to-earth personality catches Bree off-guard. When sitting in on one of Bree’s classes, Miranda gives Bree some public speaking related advice. Bree isn’t sure what to make of Miranda. At Kevin and Sarah’s baby shower, where Bree gives them a collection of children’s books, Bree turns to Evan about Miranda. Evan reassures her that Miranda is a genuinely good person, recalling their time together on Celebrity Jeopardy. While Luke attends Kevin and Sarah’s baby shower with Bree, he can only stay for a little while. This is because he wants to lay flowers on his parents’ graves. After visiting the cemetery, Luke goes to a convenience store. During this trip, a robber enters the store, demanding the cashier hand over the money from the register. Luke tries to deescalate the situation, even knocking the robber’s gun out of his hand. The scene ends with someone getting shot off-screen.

Jess and David’s story: Jess is hosting a War of 1812 reenactment weekend at The Inn at Eagle Point. While this event is taking place, she has doubts about the longevity of the bed and breakfast. She’s also frustrated she still hasn’t found an investor for her vineyard. She discusses these issues with Bree and David, who assure her she’ll find a way to make things work out. Meanwhile, David believes his father might be innocent. He presents the computer files to Conner and Margaret, who tell David to hand them over to the FBI. Several days later, FBI Agent Malik arrives at The Inn at Eagle Point. She appreciates David handing over the computer files. But she informs him there will still be a trial. David also turns to Mr. Peck’s business associate, Baron. Even though Baron doesn’t know who exactly is guilty, he believes Mr. Peck is innocent. When all of his options to hire a lawyer don’t work, David turns to Connor and Margaret for help.

Some thoughts to consider:

  • I know Mandrake meant well by bringing Evan’s father from Florida. But the fact he didn’t let Evan know ahead of time was out of character for him. Ever since he was introduced last season, Mandrake always looked out for Evan’s best interests. From what I recall, he never did anything without Evan’s permission. So, all of a sudden, Mandrake does something against Evan’s wishes? To me, that was a break in continuity.
  • The commercial for this episode was somewhat misleading. When Bree and Luke were featured in the commercial, Luke says something along the lines of how he needs to be on his own. Bree then appears concerned over what Luke told her. That scene’s presentation in the commercial gave the impression Luke and Bree were experiencing another relationship related issue. But in the episode, Luke was telling Bree he was going to visit his parents’ graves.
  • Toward the end of the episode, Kevin confesses to Sarah how he wants to go back to medical school to become a doctor. While this is a great chapter in Kevin’s story, we only have two episodes left until the show is over. According to the commercial for the next episode, it looks like Sarah might give birth. Maybe there will be another time-jump in the series finale?

Evenings At The Shore: Happy Un-Birthday to You

Bree reveals to Luke how she doesn’t like birthdays. As her birthday is approaching, all she wants is treat it like any other day. While I feel birthdays should be a day of celebration, Bree might have an interesting point. Over the years, I’ve heard quotes about how bigger moments are made up of smaller moments. I also remember a quote from the 1997 film, Titanic, about making every moment count. Based on this episode, my guess is Bree just wants every day to be equally celebrated. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as that’s why the present is called “the present”: every day can be a gift.

Name: It’s Not For Me to Say

Abby and Evan’s story: During a visit to the O’Brien family home, Evan says he feels like he’s known Abby forever. Abby asks if he’s saying he loves her. Before Evan can answer, Mick walks into the kitchen. Because Evan didn’t answer Abby’s question, Abby wonders throughout the episode if Evan loves her. She asks Kevin for advice, but he, once again, is no help. Later, in the episode, Abby confronts Evan about the unanswered question. This makes Evan wonder if she loves him back. They agree to say their responses at the same time. While Evan says, “I love you”, Abby says “You love me”. However, she does tell Evan she loves him. Toward the end of the episode, at an O’Brien family dinner, Evan shares with Abby how he wants to take a DNA test. This is because he wants to learn more about his family.

Kevin and Sarah’s story: Six months after the events of the previous episode, Kevin and Sarah are at their ultrasound appointment. Despite not wanting to know the gender of their baby, Kevin catches a glimpse on the ultrasound screen. Unsure what to do about the situation, he turns to Bree for advice, with Bree telling her brother he needs to comes clean with Sarah. He also tells Mick about his dilemma, learning more about his father during their conversation. Kevin does eventually tell Sarah what he saw, his wife delighted by this latest discovery. At the O’Brien family dinner, Sarah and Kevin reveal there are having a baby boy.

Mick and Megan’s story: When Megan returns from Los Angeles, Mick decides to take her on a date to a local, fancy restaurant. On this date, Mick tells Megan he’d like her to move back into the O’Brien family home. She refuses this offer, as she doesn’t want to disrupt Mick’s recovery. Later in the episode, Mick reveals to Megan he built a pergola in the O’Brien’s backyard. Megan is impressed when she sees this structure in person, especially since she claims to have waited over twenty years for it. This is where Megan tells Mick she needs some more time to decide what to do next. Toward the end of the episode, at the O’Brien family dinner, Megan asks Mick to retrieve an item from his room. When he goes to his room, Mick finds Megan’s suitcases, indicating she decided to move into the O’Brien family home.

David and Jess’ story: Jess is finding it difficult to secure a business loan from the bank. Even when she tweaks her business plans, it isn’t enough to receive a loan. Meanwhile, David gets a call from his dad’s lawyer. Mr. Peck wants his son to visit him at the Washington D.C. prison he’s currently in. David reluctantly visits his dad, but only as a cathartic experience. When David goes to the prison, Mr. Peck still claims his innocence. He also tells David about a secret apartment he owns in D.C., along with a flash drive containing valuable information about his company. Mr. Peck even encourages his son to contact the only business associate who didn’t abandon him. When he arrives at The Inn at Eagle Point, David looks through the files on the flash drive. This makes him start to think his dad was really framed.

Bree and Luke’s story: While talking about their relationship, Bree and Luke discover their birthday is on the same day. They also discover they don’t like birthdays. Bree and Luke tell each other not to give presents. But throughout the episode, they second guess themselves. They even turn to Kevin for advice on this issue. On their birthday, Bree gives Luke a glass plant holder for his cactus. Meanwhile, Luke didn’t give Bree a present, as that was their original agreement. He also gets a cake that says “Happy Birthday Luke and not Bree”. At the O’Brien family dinner, the O’Brien family sings “Happy Ordinary Day” to Luke and Bree.

Some thoughts to consider:

  • Before this season premiered, I assumed there would be a time jump in the series finale, as a way to tie up the last remaining loose ends. But since this time jump happened at about the season’s half-way point, it only makes sense for Kevin and Sarah’s story. After that six-month time jump, it seems like not much has changed for the other characters. It also makes me wonder if Caitlyn will share what her “whatever” was she brought up in the previous episode? I’m starting to think this time jump was an unnecessary creative decision.
  • This episode was a mixed bag. On the one hand, I have been impressed with David and Jess’ story! It has been intriguing, keeping me on the edge of my seat. Jess has even come a long way since she was introduced back in 2016. On the other hand, though, Bree and Luke’s story was not only the weakest one in this episode, it’s, so far, the weakest one this season. Did we need an hour-long story about Bree and Luke struggling to not get a gift for one another? I’m hoping their next story is much stronger than this one was.
  • As I said in this re-cap, Mick built a pergola for Megan. Between his job and recovery process, how did he find the time to build it? With this six-month time jump, I’m guessing Mick built the pergola a little bit at a time. However, I wish the dialogue had provided a clearer explanation.
